Kirsten Gwillilam

1968 ~ 2021

Kaysville, UT—Kirsten Gwilliam was born April 17, 1968, to Robert L. Gwilliam and Sandra Smith (Barton) in Albany, Georgia. She died October 25, 2021 at home in Kaysville, Utah.

Kirsten was talented in many areas, especially with languages and music. Kirsten taught herself sign language as a teenager, this led to many years working and associating in the deaf community. Kirsten served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Las Palmas, Spain. She loved Spain and also found a deaf community to serve while there. Later, as Kirsten was doing genealogy, she taught herself Swedish to understand the documents she was reading. After her mission Kirsten worked as a DeafBlind specialist and learned Braille at the Helen Keller Institute for DeafBlind Youth and Adults.

Kirsten enjoyed traveling to new and fun places. She also enjoyed playing scrabble and joined a local scrabble group, often traveling to compete in tournaments.

Many weekends Kirsten had her nieces at her home for sleepovers. Family was very important to her. She loved being with family at camping and monthly birthday parties.

Kirsten is survived by her mother Sandra Gwilliam; step-mother Junetta Gwilliam; her biological father Dennis (June) Hakanson; siblings Cindy (Galen) Wagstaff, Mitch (Crisanta) Gwilliam, Jeff (Amy) Gwilliam, Ben (Jen) Gwilliam, AnneMarie (Kent) Pilkington, Leslie (Jeff) Clark, Michelle (Steve) Hock, Annette (Dave) Carter, Kim (Cary) Martin and Rob (Melanie) Easton; and her numerous nieces, nephews and niblings who were very dear to her. Preceded in death by her father Bob Gwilliam.

My sincerest sympathy to all the family. I only knew Kirsten for a few days when she came to Calgary for a Scrabble tournament. Following the tournament I learnt she she was going to be in Calgary for a couple more days so offered to take her to see our beautiful Rocky Mountains. We spent a wonderful afternoon and evening together and her tablet is full of many of the views taken every time we stopped. She is in the foreground of many of those photos.

Kirsten and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time. I am grateful I was able to get to know Kirsten through the volunteer program at Layton Hospital. Kirsten helped many patients and visitors feel welcome and heard. She was always looking for ways to improve their experience. One thing she had told me she enjoyed doing was giving out stickers to children in the waiting areas. A couple times when we were short on supply, Kirsten would purchase some stickers with her own funds to give out. Thank you for sharing your gift of compassionate service with us, Kirsten. Sincerely, Kylee

My heart is very sad because of the news of the passing of my dear friend, Kirsten Gwilliam. I served in the Spain Las Palmas Mission along side of her. She was one of the most faithful, dedicated and devoted missionaries I have ever known. She was so, so nice to me, always. She loved everyone she served. And they loved her in return. My husband and I took 2 trips to Utah after we got married. (We live in Ohio).... Kirsten made sure she spent time with us both times! The last time we were in Utah, in 2012, she spent most of a day with us, showing us all around Salt Lake City, and then attended a small party with us the next day.... I love you, Kirsten! Thank you, thank you, thank you for being such a WONDERFUL friend! Go rest high on that mountain, and Para Siempre Dios Este con voz!!! Viva Hermana Gwilliam!!!!!!!!!

Oh, Sandra! What a beautiful, amazing daughter! She looks like a young you! My heart is with you. So many losses to weather because you love her. But there is no other way when we are separated from the ones we love. Hold fast to the many arms still round about you. And angels ARE all around you...on both sides of heaven's veil.
