Leo Greenhalgh Obituary

Leo Glade Greenhalgh

1926 ~ 2021

Leo Glade Greenhalgh passed away peacefully September 30, 2021, at the age of 95. He was born in Payson, Utah on January 19, 1926, to Ronald Lemar and Harriet Leone (Ingram) Greenhalgh. Glade grew up during the Great Depression in Goshen, Lyndal, Santaquin and Nephi, Utah. In Nephi he attended, Juab High School where he participated in track and field and served as Senior Class President graduating in 1944. Days later, he boarded a bus as an enlisted soldier in the US Army, 162nd Infantry, serving in the Philippines and Japan 1944-1946. Afterwards, he used the thousand dollars he saved up during the war to go on a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Called to the British Isles Mission (1947-1949) he spent most of his time in Edinburgh, Scotland where he gained a great love and devotion to the Scottish people and their culture. Glade attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a BA in Education - Class of 1952. He first taught history and civics at Tooele High School, before moving into his church's Seminary and Institute program. While teaching seminary in Moab, Utah he met and married Louie Annalee Holyoak in the Manti Temple, on June 7, 1955. He later taught seminary in Roosevelt, Utah before moving into elementary education in the Granite School District. Over the years he taught at Canyon Rim, Woodrow Wilson, Kearns and Taylorsville Elementary Schools. In 1984 he was forced to retire early when a rare eye disease robbed him of most of his sight. Undeterred, he attended the Utah School for the Blind and was called by his church on a mission to the Family History Library in Salt Lake City where he served as a Reference Assistant at the main desk for 20 years - 1986 to 2006.

Glade had a great love for life and took pleasure in the little things; planting a garden, hunting for topaz and trilobites, celebrating holidays with family or trying a new kind of cheese. He was constantly learning and educating himself and those around him with the things he learned. Despite his loss of sight he continued his studies of whatever interested him by listening each week to multiple books and periodicals on tape. His interests included: US history, church history, genealogy, geography, movies, poetry, rock-hunting, lapidary work, BYU sports, and all things Scottish. He had a deep love and affection for both his ancestors as well as his offspring, keeping abreast of all their activities, accomplishments and adventures.

Glade was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Louie, and brother Taryl. He leaves behind two brothers, Jack and Paul, six children; Mark, Phillip (Janice Carey), LaMar (Liz Nunez), Linden (Kara Rasmussen), Vernon (Cydney Smith) and Annetta (Eddie Geyer), 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
