Lewis Monsen Obituary

Lewis F Monsen
8/7/1933 ~ 5/10/2016
Holden, UT -Lewis F. Monsen passed away peacefully at his home in Holden, UT on May 10, 2016 at the age of 82.  He was our beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Grandpa, Coach and President. Lewis was born August 7, 1933 to Farrell and Utahna Bird Monsen in Salmon, ID. He graduated from Millard High School in Fillmore, UT and went on to marry his high school sweetheart, Janet Johnson on October 5, 1951. He continued his education at Snow College and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1956 with a degree in Secondary Education and Administration. Lewis immediately began shaping the lives of youth through his talent for teaching and love of coaching. Coach Monsen is fondly remembered by thousands of youth that he coached throughout Wyoming and Utah. Lewis began coaching at Cyprus High School and went on to coach at Star Valley High School and Millard High School. He coached both football and basketball for 29 years of his life; he led teams to ten State Championship titles, nine football, one basketball. Lewis was inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and received the Outstanding High School Coach award from the National Football Foundation in 2001 for his contributions to athletics in multiple states. Lewis loved living in Millard county and serving others. He was a constant example of love for the Gospel and taught us to love our Savior through his love of family and community. Lewis loved serving in the temple, farming, horses, sports and took pride in his ability to nurture and lead. Lewis' deepest joy and comfort were found in the gospel and family.  He demonstrated this love by serving in various roles, which included counselor in the bishopric and serving in the Stake Presidency.  Lewis and his wife Janet were called to serve in the Iowa Des Moines mission from 1993-1996 where Lewis was the Mission President. President Monsen loved his mission and spoke often of his love for his missionaries. Lewis has left a legacy that spans generations, states and sports. He will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered. Lewis is survived by his wife, Janet (Johnson) Monsen; children Madalyn (Rick) Bennett, Bryce (Sharlene) Monsen, Chris Monsen (John-deceased) and Gary (Maylene) Monsen; brother Richard (Janeal) Monsen; 31 grandchildren; 66 great grandchildren and 1 great- great grandchild. He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter Julie; sons Michael, Johnny and Robert. Funeral services will be held Sat. Janet and family, I was sorry to hear of your loss. "Mr. Monsen" (as I'll always think of him), was an important part of my high school years, at church in Holden, and in your home with Johnny and the rest of the kids our age. God bless and comfort you all thru the difficult days ahead.
