Marjorie Mickelsen Obituary

Marjorie LaRue Whalan Mickelsen 1924 ~ 2005 Marjorie LaRue Whalan Mickelsen, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, returned to her Heavenly Father on August 22, 2005. Margie was born to Elizabeth and John Edward Whalan on June 25, 1924, in Scofield, Utah. While growing up, Margie lived in Scofield and Salt Lake City. She graduated from West High in 1942 and shortly thereafter went to work in the Arms Plant where she worked in support of the war effort. She married Wayne (Micke) Mickelsen on June 22, 1951 in the Salt Lake Temple. Margie worked for the Department of the Navy and the Department of the Army during her career with the Federal government. She retired in 1986 from Fort Douglas. Margie was a faithful member of the LDS Church, where she served in the Relief Society, Primary, and Sunday School. The greatest joy in Margie's life came from being with and serving her family. She and Micke, and with their two children, and later their daughter-in-law and grandchildren spent many wonderful times together. Friends and associates often confided in Margie, and frequently sought her advice when they were experiencing difficulties. She was loved by all who were blessed to spend time with her. She is preceded in death by her sweetheart, Micke, her parents, two sisters Nora Vivian Petersen, and LaVada Petersen, and her brother, John (Jack) Whalan. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen LaRue, her son, Richard, his wife Tara, and her grandchildren, Lauren, Alexandria, Mercedes, and Bryce. The family wishes to thank the many family members, friends, and neighbors who have assisted them in caring for Margie during her illness. They especially wish to thank Toni and the many others at Community Nursing Services of Utah County Hospice for the gentle and loving care they gave to Margie. Their assistance allowed her family to care for her at home until her passing. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 27, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 E 1300 S., where viewings will be held Friday evening, from 6:00-8:00 p.m., and one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

What a beautiful, tender lady my Aunt Marg has always been. When I was young, I was in awe of her... so feminine and sweet. I don't recall ever seeing her angry at another person or saying an unkind word about another. Such a blessing to be able to call her my Aunt. Even though it has been quite a number of years now, since I have seen Aunt Marg, it's hard to picture her sweet personality and spirit not upon this earth now. You will be thought of and missed Aunt Marg.

Dr. Mickelsen, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Even though your Mom is no longer suffering, the pain and loss in your heart stays for a long time. Your families love and care for her meant so much to her.

My warmest thoughts are with you and your family. May God Bless you all.

As a young child I can remember going to visit my Uncle Wayne and Aunt Marge in their home. My favorite reason for going was the player piano in the basement. My sister and I would easily spend an hour or more downstairs on that piano with our cousins Kathy and Richard. What choice memories those days are.

May the Lord bless Kathy, Richard and their family as they move forward in their own life and reflect upon the cherished traditions of their parents.
