MONT MICKELSON Obituary

Mont Jens Mickelson 1923 ~ 2009 Mont Jens Mickelson passed away Tuesday, December 15, 2009. Born in Bonita, Utah on September 26, 1923. At the start of World War II, he enlisted in the armed services, and with his beloved companion of more than 60 years, Ruth Sonntag Mickelson, reported to Wendover Air Force Base. The couple, saying of their time spent in Wendover, "It was the happiest time we have experienced." An air of secrecy filtrated the base with the arrival of B-29s. Volunteers were recruited for a "high risk," "top secret" Air Engineering Squadron whose mission would probably change the tide of the war. They could decline if desired. However, Mont stepped forward, volunteered, and became a proud member of the famous 509th Composite Bombardment Group, which was a leading factor in ending World War II. After the war, Mont graduated a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine.Through out his life, he worked as a Quality Control Engineer. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he held many church callings; most recently serving as an Ordinance Worker, with his beloved wife, at the Bountiful, Utah Temple. He was a proper, reverent man with a loyalty and pride to serve our country and his Heavenly Father. Devoted to his spouse, children and grand children, Mont loved to spend time with his family and companion Ruth; sons Mont Jr., (Kathy); Alan (Janine); Robert (Chris), and daughter Michelle. We sorrow at his passing. Services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009 at the Kimball Mill Ward, 650 South 200 East, Bountiful. Friends may call Friday December 18, 2009 from 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, SLC and Saturday from 12 noon - 12:45 p.m. prior to services. Internment at Salt Lake City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution be made to the charity of your choice.

My first memory of my Uncle Mont was when I was just five. Dad had just bought a new house in Bountiful. Mont and Max came numerous times over the summer to help put in the yard and get the house set up.

Mont inspired us to visit the museum in Wendover a few years ago. We enjoyed hearing of some of Mont's experiences while serving with the B-29 unit that played such a significant role in ending the war with Japan. He was rightfully proud of his service to our country during that difficult time.

Through the years our family always enjoyed visits from Mont and Ruth. In later years, as my parents health began to fail, Mont and Ruth were very supportive and always there for Mom and Dad. Mont was always a real gentleman. We will all miss him.

We didn't find out about Uncle Mont's passing until this afternoon. That's what happens when you move out of state, I guess. Mont was my favorite uncle. I especially enjoyed the time I spent with him and Ruth the last visit I made. We copied genealogical documents and told family stories. Uncle Mont was a gentleman and a gentle man. I will miss him.

I had the wonderful opportunity of taking Mont out to Wendover last April, to participate in a press conference announcing Wendover Airfield's Enola Gay Hanger as one of America's 11 Most Endangered Places by the National Trust For Historic Preservation. In the several hours that I spent with Mont, I gained some great insight into the history of this great airfield that I love, while enjoying Oreos and Dr. Peppers. I also gained a friend and an example of the type of person that I want to be. I have never met a finer gentleman, pure class. Thank you Mont for being a great friend and supporter of the Historic Wendover Airfield Preservation Foundation. Our deepest condolenses to the Mickelson family.

Mont was like a grandpa for my kids. He was even able to attend Abby's baptism and stand in the circle for her confirmation. He was like family, even writing to my dad when he was in Iraq. He will be greatly missed, yet forever held dear in our hearts.
