Nathan Gallenson Obituary

Nathan Gallenson "N8" Nathan Gallenson, 91, passed away Jan. 15, 2009 after living a great life. Born Jan.13, 1918, in Salt Lake City to William and Dora Gallenson. Graduated from South High and the U of U with a BS in Bacteriology. Served in US Army 1945-46 as Sr.Tech. Sgt. working with infectious diseases. Cited for research on "Deadly Q Fever". Worked for Utah State Health Dept. as Chief Bacteriologist until 1948. N8 joined his brothers and father in the family business, Gallensons. He worked until he was 88-years-old. N8 was regarded as the last of the "State Street Mayors". N8 had a great big heart and a mind that never quit. He had a passion for knowledge and learning driven by his amazing curiosity quotient. N8 enjoyed shooting, fishing, hunting and wondering what made the world tick. He was a member of the Utah Westerners since 1971. He loved having a" blast" with his pals after closing time at the store. N8 leaves behind a legacy of family, friends and close companions. At N8's request there will not be a funeral service. The family wishes to thank John Baxter, the staff at Wentworth at Willow Creek, Hearts for Hospice and N8's many friends who kept up his spirit during his last difficult year. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in N8's memory to your favorite charity.

Gallenson's,
N8 was an amazing guy, I first met him when I was about 14 and started the Gallenson odessy. His business sense was the old fashioned type, and people always came back for more. I was always amazed at how how smart he was and that he never put limits on his kids, encouraging them them to learn, explore the world and what it had to offer.
Some of the things I remember where my first pheasant hunting trip, Steve driving to Duchesne on a learners permit, a lot of time at Strawberry with N8, Steve, Marv and a bunch of other fun guys, Xmas parties, and many, many more.
Thanks so much for including me in your family.

Rest in peace, how much this says:
Be free of pain, no more weeping and no more pain. My deepest sympathies to all the Gallenson family.
I will always remember the many memories and laughter Nate shared with his brother and me, and the support and love showed at the time of the passing of Marv. I loved all my visits with him in the rest home and enjoyed giving those good back rubs. Gentleness will always be remembered.

I am intimidated by the folks, like relatives, who knew Nate so well, but I was in the Westerners when Nate joined in 1971, and I must have gone on at least 35 field trips with him. (And we weren't always drunk). So that I learned to understand his character--a fine, honorable gentleman of great knowledge, both of science and of life. And he could always see the humor in every situation. When I saw him in his last days he could still joke about experiences on the trails of the Westerners in past years. In a word, Nate was unique!

My Sweet Uncle Nate,
Thank you for making me laugh and filling my life with fun. Thank you for being such a wonderful big brother to my dad Marv. He loved you so much. Thank you for emphasizing the importance of education throughout my life. It was hard not to see you up and around helping other people like you did and I guess you just got tired and it was your time to go. You were so strong, even in the end. I will miss you more than you know and think about you and my dad fishing or looking at the heavens through a telescope. Please tell my dad I love him and miss him, give him a suck face for me. Give grandma and grandpa, Leo and Chick a hug for me. I hope to see all of you again when I leave this planet.

Love,
Rochelle (Gallenson) Bohn

I just learned of the loss of Nate, it is with a heavy heart that this gets written. I don’t know where the past few years have gone as life has sped by. But I will always remember his smile, smirk, laugh, perspective and perception of life and his respectful firm handshake. He could give you confidence when you needed it most. In my near two decades of working at the shop, having Nate as a mentor and a friend was truly a privilege and has permanently made an impact on my life and who I am today. I wish to say thank you for that. I share in the mourning of his passing and celebrate his life as a wonderful person.

I write this with a heavy heart. Nate had so many friends, and he deserved all of them. I feel very fortunate to have known and loved him and have comfort in the sweet memories of all the happy times we shared together. The world has lost someone very special.

I thought I was the only one who called him N8. In the thirties I spent more time at gallensons, than at my own house. Nate was so knowledgeable on any subject, it was just a lot of fun just talking to him. Acousin and a good Buddy--I loved him. I'm sure you in heaven, but tell me when it gets hot. (inside joke)

Dear Marcia, Steve and Art,
I have so many great memories of your Dad. His great smile was always so warm and welcoming. His dry sense of humor kept me sharp. He was always full of questions that made me know he cared about me and what I thought. As a kid growing up, he was Marcia's funny Dad. As an I adult, I respected his knowledge and strong community connections. I went to him several times for his input on news stories.
He leaves behind a rich legacy of family and friends and I am fortunate to have known him.

Papa,
We were so lucky and fortunate to have you in our lives for as long as we did. Thanks for being the best father and father-in-law. Be sure to say hi to your brothers Marve, Leo and Chick. As cousin Jamie says, "heaven is no longer safe with all four of you up there". Have a good time. You earned it.
Love always and forever.

Steve,
N8 was one of a kind. He will be missed by all who knew him. He was a square shooter in business and made good "Westerners" field trips great!

N8 has been part of our family's life nearly as long as I can remember. As my dad's dearly cherished friend for decades, he was by extension our friend and part of our greater family. But on his own merit we delighted in N8 for his gentle humor, his knowledge, his many skills, and his great heart. He was special beyond words. Our hearts ache in shared sorrow with all who knew and loved him.
