Newman Gregory Obituary

Gregory Newman

1986 - 2024

- Gregory Paul Newman, beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away on May 16, 2024, at the age of 38. Born on February 1, 1986, Gregory lived a life filled with passion and determination balanced with a kind heart and an infectious laugh that touched the lives of all who knew him. Gregory grew up in Westlake Village, California, graduating from Westlake High School in 2004 as a key member of the Varsity Football team that went undefeated in his Senior year, 14-0, winning the CIF Division IV State Championship. He would round out his high school career with the following awards: Westlake High Defensive MVP, Marmonte League Defensive Player of the Year, All-CIF Team, and Gatorade Defensive Player of the Year for the state of California. In 2009, Greg was inducted into the Westlake High School Football Hall of Fame. Greg earned a football scholarship from University of Colorado, Boulder, and played for the Buffs for one year before transferring to the University of Utah, where he joined the football team on the defensive line, playing for Coaches Kyle Whittingham and Gary Andersen. His final season of football was an exhilarating undefeated season, the Utes finishing with a 13-0 record, capped off with a victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide in the 2009 Sugar Bowl. He was named to the All-Mountain West Team in 2008, but his proudest achievement was the award his team recognized him with: Most Inspirational Player. He was inducted into the University of Utah Football Hall of Fame in 2023 as a member of the 2008 Utah Utes Sugar Bowl team. After graduating from the University of Utah with a degree in Economics, Gregory worked in Los Angeles for the Radnet Corporation before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He touched many individuals through his selfless service, leaving lasting impressions on the hearts of those he served. After serving his mission, Gregory worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland as a Trade Support Associate in Salt Lake City. He leveraged that experience to secure a similar role at UBS in Salt Lake City. That experience made him realize he needed to go to NYC to achieve his goal of becoming a portfolio manager. He accepted an offer to work for Northern Trust in New York City as an Associate Portfolio Manager. While in New York, he started down the road to become a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) - passing both the Level 1 and 2 CFA exams. He loved life in the city and was relentless in his pursuit to establish himself in the elite financial world of Wall Street. When the COVID-19 pandemic reached our shores in 2020, life in New York City changed dramatically, and Gregory made the decision to accept a job offer with one of his closest childhood friends, Brian Urrea, as the Chief Financial Officer for his family's trucking company in California. Gregory had a desire to "finish strong" and was tireless in his pursuit of his dreams.

Gregory's heart matched his size; he was known for his kindness and compassion for others, with a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, as well as all those whose lives he touched. We will forever cherish the memories we shared with him, and his legacy as an exceptional athlete, dedicated professional, and kind-hearted individual will continue to inspire those who knew him. Gregory is survived by his parents Yvonne and Terry Newman, and his Laura Dyer with her husband Geoff and their children Jackson and Cassidy.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Church located at 549 South 1525 West, Farmington, Utah 84025.

Greg was close friends with our son Mike. As a family we were very close to Greg and loved having him at our home. I communicated with him a few months back trying to assist in finding employment. I think he and Mike did talk back then to restore a great friendship. My heart is broken for his family.
