Peggy Barton Obituary

Peggy Petersen Barton died on July 9, 2021, following a short illness.

Peggy was born on August 25, 1931, to Mark Edward Petersen and Emma Marr McDonald Petersen. After graduating from East High School and the University of Utah she taught elementary school. She also became a gourmet cooking instructor and enjoyed cooking and entertaining. Peggy loved to shop, looking for the perfect clothes and accessories. Her home featured stylish decor and eclectic art as well as a collection of white orchids. She traveled extensively, often with her father, visiting Britain, Scandinavia, the Near East and Mediterranean, the Far East and Canada. She loved spending time with—and spoiling—her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also adored and spoiled her dogs, including a series of Irish wolfhounds. Peggy volunteered at the Wentworth at East Millcreek retirement community and served as a hostess at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.

Peggy leaves two daughters, Sydney Bennion and Drew Quinn, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Her son, Mark Stephens, and sister, Marian Petersen, predeceased her.

A viewing will be held at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, on Thursday, July 15 from 6-8 pm. She will be interred at the Salt Lake Cemetery in a family graveside service. -

Mrs. Barton was my all time favorite elementary school teacher. I had her for the 4th grade in around 1988/'89 at Whittier Elementary School in WVC. She was an incredible motivator to me at such a young age and always found ways to make my young mind excel. I am now in my 40's and have thought about her often and the impact she had on me in my young life to be a successful man. I wish I could have found her later in life to thank her in person for the profound impact she made on me as a young individual. She was a talented author and had a very kind heart. Thank you Peggy for the small amount of time I got to spend with you but more so the amazing impact you had on me in that short time. God Bless you and your family.

I am sorry to just learn of Peggy´s passing. I grew up in her neighborhood and I thought she was the coolest mom ever!!! So friendly and fun and gorgeous. Always very kind to me, including me in swimming at the Fort Douglas, going out for treats while doing errands! She was a lovely mother and a lovely neighbor. I was sad to learn from this obit that Mark passed years earlier! Also a fun friend, I remember playing Berlin Wall with him. A wonderful family. My love to Sydney and Drew! Rest In Peace dear Peggy and Mark.

I never had Peggy as a teacher, but I remember her well. Everyone wanted her as their teacher! One thing I will never forget was her request to our Elementary school principal to play "When The Children Cry" by White Lion over the speakers, for all of the students to hear. It was a profound song and a testament to her love for the Youth she taught and came into contact with. This was in the 1980's. I thank her for that special moment. May the Lord bless and comfort her family. Thank you for sharing her with us.

I feel so blessed to have served with Peggy at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building for several years. My husband and I loved visiting with her. She was always dressed stylishly with a beautiful smile and welcoming spirit. She will greatly missed. Love and peace to her dear family!

I visited Peggy every month for many years. She became a good friend. I loved everything about her. I especially loved hearing about her family and her family history. There is no one like Peggy. She dearly loved her family. I pray her family will have peace and comfort at this time.
