Philip Ashton-Sharpe Obituary

Philip Richard Ashton-Sharpe 1942 ~ 2008 Philip Richard Ashton-Sharpe, father, brother and friend, passed away December 31, 2008, from brain cancer. Phillip was born in Bath, England, August 15, 1942, to Rose Von Niederhausern and Francis Richard Ashton-Sharpe. He immigrated to the United States in 1957, along with his mother and brother, Oliver. They settled in Logan, Utah. Phil served his adopted country in the Army with a tour of duty in Viet Nam. He married Karen Tanner. They had two children -- son Richard (Ricky) and daughter Sonya. Ricky died in infancy. Karen and Philip were later divorced. His work took him to the Salt Lake area. It was there that he met Catherine Gerrish and together they raised their son, Justin. They later divorced. Phil owned and operated Sharpe Engineering, a service company for the movie trade and a snow-cat leasing company. He worked in the Scouting program, helping Justin and other boys of Troup 51 in Sandy. He enjoyed this very much and was proud of what they accomplished. He loved the beauty of the outdoors. He loved the Utes. He loved life. Phil was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was always willing to give a helping hand to those in need. Phil was the "go to guy." He could get two ton of gear in a one ton trailer, he could fix anything, all with a cheerful smile. He always had a joke or a story to tell. He made us laugh. Phil, you will be greatly missed. The family would like to thank those doctors and nurses of the VA Hospital, the staff of Garden Terrace Care Center, and his many friends for the loving care that they gave Phil. Philip is survived by his sons, Justin Sharpe, Burns, Oregon, and Josh Kielkowski, Layton, Utah; brother, Oliver Sharpe, West Point, Utah; sisters, Alma (Stevie) Hobbs, Crawley, England, and Frances McKeon, New Port Richie, Florida; step-brother, Charles Von Niederhausern, Providence, Utah; step-sister, Lucy Ellis, Logan, Utah. An informal memorial gathering will be held Saturday, January 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Wheeler Farm, 6351 South 900 East, Salt Lake City, UT, in the Activity Barn. At Phil's request, in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the organization of your choosing.

Phil,
We will miss you. My family has known Phil for over thirty-three years, since he built our snowcat, his first. That cat is still in service to this day. Phil was a great person, and would always be willing to help, no matter what time of day. He always had a smile and would joke around. I’ll miss coming down to the shop to talk, work, or just learn about what you knew. Godspeed Phil

Justin,
It was such a nice funeral service and brought back so many memories! Your family was always so much fun and so kind and so helpful. We consider you as the Kamps best friends and will miss your dad, but we have some of the 'greatest' times ever to remember and so do you.
We love you Justin--know you are in our thought and our prayers. Stay strong and keep in touch.

I had the pleasure of meeting Phil when he would stop into the Lone Star for a bowl of soup. Along with Sadie and Tracey we would listen to phil tell stories and jokes. We loved him very much. He was a wonderful man and we will miss his smiles and soft spoken voice!

Phil, you were one funny guy. I will sincerely miss our times on the Salt Flats. We had had some crazy times out there. After long hot days shooting out there, I always looked forward to the end of the day, knowing you and Mike or Josh would be waiting at the end of the road to give us a good wash and a great laugh. I hope at the end of this road, I'll see you there as well. I will miss you my friend.

You will be greatly missed my friend. I appreciated and really enjoyed the time you gave to me, and fellow scouts in Troop 51. The camping trips were always adventurous (especially Strawberry Reservoir) and your stories ever so humorous!
I'm glad I had the chance to visit with you on many occasions at your work throughout the years..and I take it as an honor to be called one of "Tom's Boys!" From one father to the next, you did a great job raising Roscoe, and I'm sure he'll leave a similar amazing impression on this world like his old man.
We Miss You Phil and God Bless You!
