Ralph Erickson Obituary

1924 ~ 2011
Ralph Calvin Erickson "Cal", our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on December 12, 2011 at the age of 87. He was born February 16, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Florence Josephine Gustaveson and Ralph Fredrick Erickson; the third of five children.
Cal grew up in the Salt Lake City area, attending Garfield Elementary, Irving Jr. High and East High School. He was drafted in the Army in 1942 and he served for over three years during World War II. He served in both theaters (the European and Pacific). Dad was proud of his military service and later in life would often pull out his Army uniform to wear to work every Veteran's Day.
Cal graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in Political Science. He also spent time at the University of Mississippi and the University of Georgia while in the Army.
After the Army, Cal lived and worked in New York City and enjoyed the vibrant life of the city in the 1950s. He saw Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Tommy Dorsey, and others perform in NYC. Cal loved music, especially the Big Band era music. He knew an endless amount of songs.
After some time in New York, Cal decided he needed to serve the Lord as a missionary. Cal served in the California Mission from 1955 to 1957.
After many years of waiting for the right lady, he met and married Myrna Green on May 23, 1964 in the St. George Utah LDS Temple. They were blessed with three children, James, Caroline, and Ann.
Cal worked for many years in the sales/retail industry. He worked for Auerbach's, ZCMI, and Anderson Lumber among others. He was working up until he was 83 years old for Ace Hardware keeping the nuts and bolts aisle organized, a job no one wanted to do but Dad. He loved to work and enjoyed meeting many, many people over the years. It was hard to go anywhere with Dad and not have him run into someone he knew. He was a true people person.
Dad's trademark whistle was a symbol of his positive outlook on life. He loved life. He was optimistic and cheerful. He loved to help people and took joy in seeing people happy. Dad was a ravenous reader and could spend hours devouring the newspaper, the scriptures and any book around.
Dad was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many positions including High Priest Group Leader, Stake Clerk, Stake MIA leader, and he was a faithful hometeacher. He loved the Lord and could bring any subject in conversation back to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife, Myrna; son, James (Holly) - West Jordan, UT; daughters Caroline (Doug) Green - Salt Lake City, UT, and Ann - Westminster, CO; five grandchildren (Annie, Justin, Jacob, Abigail, and Jack), one brother Ken and one sister Linda. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Carole and Phyllis.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Garden Terrace for the tender, loving and dignified manner in which they cared for Dad during his final weeks.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 16, 2011 at noon at the Forestview LDS Ward building 1111 E Charlton (2818 S). Viewing to be held Thursday evening, December 15, 2011 6 to 8 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary (3401 S Highland Drive) and one hour prior to funeral services at the Forestview building. Interment at Wasatch Lawn.

Dear Family of Cal
Elder dad was my first companion in the California Mission. He was patient, kind and very insightful in what he taught me. We loved to play and sing togehter in Burbank. We enountered such a variety of people in our tracking from Church of Christ ministers to exmormosn. His skill in dealing in a loving way with these folks taught me much and i've tried to follow his example in my travels through life. Years ago whn I worked at the COB on the Finance and Records Dept. I often had lunch with Henry D. Taylor. He told me of all the missionaries he had that Cal was the one he could count on who could start or salvage missionaries with love and patience. May the eternal peace of the gospel comfort your hearts at this season. I look forward to the California Mission in the here after as I meet again my favorite senior companion.

Dear Myrna and Family,
I am so sorry we were unable to be there at Cal's funeral. I talked to Janet, Amy and Courtney and they shard with me how wonderful the service was and how much they enjoyed visiting with all of you. What a special man Cal was and we especially appreciated all of his visits to Phyllis when she was at Sandy Regional. That means a lot to all of us. He did have such a wonderful smile and upbeat attitude. Our thoughts are with you all at this time. Love, Pat and Ed Fizer

My heart opens wide to Myrna, James, Caroline, and Ann in this time of change and grief. I will ALWAYS remember living next door to the Erickson family, and I was especially fond of the way that Cal whistled beautifully and constantly when working around the home. What a wonderful man, who will be missed by MANY.

Dear Myna and family, we send condolences to you for the loss of Cal. My son MacKay called me this morning to alert me of his passing. MacKay has to leave for his company to Nevada today for a conference for a week. I am unable to attend the funeral as I have an eye appointment tomorrow for a laser treatment. If I can get a ride tonight for the viewing I will come, but I am unable to drive at night. May the Lord bless you at this difficult time. Love, Kathryn MacKay Jones

I am broken hearted to see this obituary today. Cal and I worked together at Anderson Lumber for 6 years and became good friends. We could talk for hours. I loved hearing his stories about his x ray machines, his military service, his mission, politics and his family. Our birthdays were only 6 days apart and he would bring in a birthday cake for us to share every year. I remember he would always be singing or whistling as he went about his work. I was so happy we were able to keep in touch and visit even after I left Anderson Lumber. I will always treasure the gifts he gave to me, books and notes. He was such a kind, thoughtful and fun person. I will miss him dearly. I was blessed to have him as a friend. My condolences to his sweet family. I'm so sorry for your loss. I look forward to the day when we can all see Cal again.

I wanted to send my love for you and for Cal. I always loved his stories and admired him for his hard work. Even when he was in his 80's he was running circles around many of us. He is a great example of serving as long as possible. I send my love to you.

I am so sorry about your loss. Mr. Erickson was my boss at ZCMI when I was 18 years old. I worked for him nearly 10 years in the personal shopping portion of the store. After we both quit he continued to keep in touch with me. The past 5 fives years He would stop into my work at Quilt Etc to pay a visit with me. I love him so much; he was always interested in me and my little family. Sorry I will not be able to attend the service. My thoughts will be with you at your time of loss.

I loved and will miss Cal from the Old Yale Ward.

I never saw him without a smile on his face. I always figured he'd have to have that smile surgically removed if he ever wanted to frown. ! !

He was Always kind to me when I was a kid...and believe you me, that took some real doing !

I will always have fond memories of Cal.

My best to your family during this sad time.
