Richard Lafferty
1949 ~ 2024
- Richard Lafferty, our dear brother, brother-in-law and uncle, passed away from Parkinson's Disease on August 6, 2024, in the Auberge at Aspen Park Memory Care Facility in Millcreek, Utah. He had suffered from Parkinson's Disease for several years but managed to live in the home he had built until the last year of his life. Rich was born to Richard Joseph Lafferty and Hattie Margaret Sadler in San Pedro, California. He lived in California until he was nine years old, and then moved with his family to Seattle, Washington. He graduated from high school there, and then went to Brigham Young University where he graduated with a B.A. in Spanish. For a while he lived in Connecticut where he helped people to sign up for social services. He lived there to be near his best friend and older brother, Terry. He moved back to Utah in 1996 to move into his home that he previously built. Rich loved to garden, plant trees and bushes, cook, read, watch football, listen to classical music, play the guitar and eat Burger King Whoppers. For a time, he remodeled homes for a living and was always there to help his siblings with their remodeling needs for their homes. He landscaped not only his own home, but he also did a beautiful job in landscaping two of his sisters' homes. He was a master builder of decks, too. Whatever Rich did, he always demanded perfection of himself.
Since he never married, his siblings and their children were very important to him. He always loved to get together with our family for the holidays and other events. He especially loved Thanksgiving and Christmas. He helped cook delicious food for both holidays. For Christmas Eve he insisted on having his nieces play their musical instruments (viola and flute) to accompany him with his guitar for our Christmas Eve program. He selected beautiful music for them to play and Christmas songs for us to sing. He always gave us thoughtful Christmas presents suited to our personalities and interests. On Christmas morning he would come over to his sister Moira and her husband, Robert's house to make omelets for their family.
Our family would like to thank the nurses and other caregivers at the Auberge for taking good care of Richard. We also want to thank Richard's neighbors for always watching out for him, providing meals and other needs. Richard is survived by his siblings Kathy Paul Mowrey, (Dan) Moira Rampton, (Robert) Patrice Buglewicz, (Pat) David Lafferty, (Sandra) and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother Terry Lafferty and brother-in-law Erich Robert Paul.
A Memorial will be held on Saturday, November 9 at 2 P.M. at Larkin Sunset Gardens, 1950 East 10600 South, Sandy, UT. Anyone may come early at 1:30 to view a slideshow of Rich.
