Robert Pommerville Obituary

Robert W. Pommerville 1940 ~ 2009 MOUNTAIN GREEN - RobertWilliam Pommerville peacefully passed away in the loving arms of his children and in the comfort of his home on February 8, 2009 from complications relating to leukemia. He blessed us with 68 short, but truly meaningful years. Robert (Bob), was born on September 24, 1940 in Monterey Park, California to Nelly Molly Murphy and William Wilford Pommerville. At an early age he realized the importance of education and developed an unquenchable thirst for knowledge and truth about both temporal and spiritual matters. After high school, he served a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Bob loved missionary work and treasured that time in his life. He graduated from Occidental College with a Bachelor's Degree in History, and later graduated from the University of Utah with a Juris Doctorate Degree. He felt that being a lawyer would grant him the greatest opportunity to "make a difference", and he did just that. He married his eternal sweetheart, Sylvia Arlene Wall in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on June 10, 1966. They were happily married for 41 years until Arlene passed away in late 2007. Bob was a faithful, supportive, and loving husband who cherished his sacred relationship with Arlene and looked forward to the day when they could be reunited. Married life took them to California, Michigan, back to California, Arkansas, and finally to Mountain Green, Utah in 2000. The couple had 11 children; seven daughters and four sons. Bob was a kind, loving, and devoted father and a true friend to his children. Bob touched and changed countless lives by his constant and unwavering example. He worked in the health care industry as General Council and Senior VP for Beverly Enterprises and as CEO for Avalon Health Care. He served in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as Bishop, Stake President, and Patriarch. He was a man of faith, integrity, and goodness and made those around him better. He lived life to the fullest and was successful by any measure or standard. He was an inspiration to his family, friends, and colleagues alike. He will be greatly missed. Bob is preceded in death by his sweetheart, Arlene, and by his parents. He is survived by his sister Winelle (Elmer) Wilford, 11 children: Mark (Katarina), Robin (Richard) Walker, Holly (Andrew) Landauer, Darcy (Mark) Allan, Elise (Mike) Johnson, Amy (Todd) Tucker, Kylee (Mark) McClellan, Heather (David) Jensen, Matthew (Camille), John (Amber), Todd (Corian), and 31 grandchildren. The Pommerville family would like to thank Cage, from Hearts for Hospice; Dr. James P. Kushner; his nurse Mary Vietti; and all the staff at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital for their compassionate and loving care of Bob over the years. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Highlands LDS Chapel, 5378 W. Old Highway Road in Mountain Green, UT. Friends and family may call at the church, Fri. from 6-8 p.m. and Sat. from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment, Mountain Green Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.walker-mortuary.com

I am So sorry to hear about the loss of Bob, as we called him at work. I worked with him at Beverly Enterprises as a corporate paralegal when he was the senior vice President in our legal department for many years. I Remember when he came to our company from Michigan and lived in Glendora. He was such a nice guy to work for and extremely pleasant. We traveled together on a business trip once and he made sure that my hotel room was safe before I entered it. He was such a fatherly figure and very caring. I am so pleased to read that he became CEO of Avalon Healthcare.

It was an opportunity to workwith Bob Pommerville during his time as an attorney and General Counsel for Beverly Enterprises. He was always fair in his analysis. He had a brilliant mind, quick wit, and a always a pleasant manner.

We will all miss him.

I am sad to hear that you have now lost you dad. He was and will forever be someone that many look up to. With the gospel it makes it a bit easier to let the mortal pain not take over. I am greatful that he is no longer seperated from his loving wife and they can be together again. Please know that your family is in my prayers.

Your father was the Bishop in our Ward in Midland Michigan when I investigated and joined the church. I took every single discussion in your families living room and I will never forget the love and support I felt there. I have to say your Dad was the most influential Bishop I've ever had in my life. I will cherish a conversation we had just last year when he called me at my office after I had sent a card when your Mom died. He said things even then that meant so very much to me. I will forever cherish the place he (and your Mom) hold in my heart. My love and prayers are with you all.

Dearest Pommerville Family,

I am saddened that your beloved father has passed on. I know you take great comfort in knowing he is with your mother now. I will always remember him, he was such an inspiration. I miss his great "sea" stories and our conversations about where the best restaurants were. He had a great sense of humor and was so honest and true. You always knew where you stood. I am proud to have known him and worked for him. He was a great man.

God Bless,

Working for and with Bob at Avalon Health Care was a pleasure and I developed a great respect for him as an employer and a person. I always remember him having a ready smile and a wonderful story to tell.

As someone said to me last year, "May you rejoice in his return to his Heavenly Father." Still, those left behind feel deep loss and sorrow.
I knew your Dad as President Pommerville, and greatly respected and admired him. Temple recommend interviews were most spiritual, but usually ended with a discussion about education, and the Los Angles Dodgers!
I have in my Book of Mormon a note on page 219: "Alma 5:14-19 quoted by Pres. Pommerville on his release as Fort Smith Stake President 20 February 2000." I remember his very powerful talk that day - he left us with much to think about..."can you look up, having the image of God engraven upon your countenances?"
Pres. Pommerville could.
What a great legacy Bob and Arlene left to the Pommerville Bunch. I really admire your family. It was my great good fortune to have the Final Three Pommervilles in seminary class.
Carry On!

Just after our marriage over 31 years ago, we moved to Midland, MI, where we met our bishop, Bishop Pommerville. He was a kind and gentle man, and always willing to be of service -- and not timid about giving others the same opportunity! He leaves behind a powerful example of loving service, and memories we will cherish always.

Sincerely,

Sterling Wall

They say funerals are for the living, so my message would be for Uncle Bob's children. What a great legacy both of your parents left, in you. Since my earliest days I remember a "lot" of kids getting out of the van at reunions, singing, performing, and helping me burn my fingers with fire works (okay, that was just Mark). It is evident that your parents left a legacy of a close knit family. Hats off to Uncle Bob and Aunt Arlene.
With many good memories,
Sterling Wall, 3rd son of your Uncle Elwood

February 12, 2009

You’re finally on your way to go back home again
You’re finally on your way to see your wife
Hold her in your arms close your eyes
It’s time for us to say goodbye

God is waiting for his child
Smiles await on the other side
Rest now father go join your bride
The time has come to say goodbye

We’ll miss you everyday til we come home again
We’ll miss you everyday til we’re with you
Watch over us stay by our side
There’s no such thing as goodbye

I wish to offer my condolences to the Pommerville Family at this time for the loss of your your Father Robert ! I am a phlebotomist for ARUP and work at the Huntsman Hospital, and had the chance to draw labs on your Father many times, at times excessively, during his treatment. He always kept a postitive attitude and had a sense of humor that I'll never forget !

May the Lord bless you during this time of your loss !
