Robert Stott Obituary

Robert LeGrande Stott

1944 ~ 2022

- Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Robert "Bob" LeGrande Stott, passed away late Saturday afternoon in his home, March 5th, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lompoc, California on July 2, 1944, to Norman and Beth Stott. Raised in Pleasant Grove, Utah, Bob often spoke fondly of his childhood memories and of his tight knit graduating class of '62, whom he kept in contact with throughout his life.

After graduating from Pleasant Grove High School, Robert served an LDS mission in Texas. While on his mission, his mother passed away. It will be a sweet reunion for them both as he loved her dearly.

Robert graduated from Brigham Young University and has been the Cougar board's greatest fan ever since. Robert attended many BYU football games over the years, where he was notorious for his bleacher side coaching, despite the fact he sat about a mile away from the field. No criminal in the courtroom ever got it worse than Levell Edwards. After the Y, Bob donned red while pursuing a law degree at the University of Utah Law School, which prepared him well for an illustrious career.

While in law school, Robert met and married the love of his life, Deanie Russell, in the Salt Lake Temple on August 25, 1971, and together they raised six children- Jenna, Lynley, Jaclyn, Casey, Carrie, and Jeffrey in Farmington, Utah. He is a proud grandfather of 24 grandchildren.

Bob served in many different positions in the LDS church throughout his life, but his favorite was as Sunday School teacher, while his most legendary was as nursery leader. He loved history and would spend hours researching gospel topics (on a yellow legal pad) to bring insightful commentary to every lesson. After retirement, Bob especially enjoyed working on legal aspects of the Joseph Smith Papers Project.

Bob was generous of heart, finding ways to give of his time and his talents. He read for the blind, helped people with their tax forms, visited and brought homemade treats to elderly widows, enjoyed taking a blind friend to the opera, and for years volunteered weekly at a local food pantry.

For 40 years Robert prosecuted some of the most difficult and high-profile cases in Salt Lake County, working almost solely on murder and capital punishment trials. Some of the more notorious criminals he prosecuted included Ted Bundy, Arthur Gary Bishop, Ervil LeBaron, Joseph Paul Franklin, Ronnie Lee Gardner, Mark Hofmann, Mark Hacking, and many others. In his years before retirement, his focus became one of passing the torch as he pulled from decades of experience to mentor young lawyers. Robert was respected for his civility, humility, and even temperament, by all he worked with.

Sim Gill, District Attorney, described Bob as more than just a colleague, "I learned from him that the good to which we aspire as prosecutors is not separate from the good, we pursue in our daily lives. He stressed the authentic commitment to principle--not as blind subservience but rather the pursuit of the good, which, once reconciled, is pursued with full vigor."

The most admirable aspect of Dad's career was how well he balanced work with family life. To us kids, Dad was just your average, regular guy. No job around the house or yard was out of his jurisdiction, with one glaring exception: he was no Tim the Toolman. Dad grocery shopped, did the dishes, and developed a surprising talent for pie making and homemade ice cream. It wasn't an uncommon sight to find Dad sitting at the kitchen table clipping the latest blue-ribbon recipe from the newspaper. He spent time doing things with us like coaching t-ball and playing many competitive kickball, badminton, and croquet games in the backyard.

Dad- we express our deep admiration and gratitude for the manner and example in which you chose to conduct your life in both career and at home. We love you always and will do our best to carry on your legacy.

Til we meet again, there will always be, "Things to do, people to see, places to go."

Viewing services will be held at Russon Brothers Mortuary in Farmington on Friday, March 11th from 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday March 12th at 11am with a viewing from 9:45-10:45 am at the Farmington Steed Creek chapel 347 S. 200 W. Farmington, UT.

As a rookie prosecutor, it was my good fortune to be assigned to second-chair two capital cases with Bob, and I learned how to try cases and comport myself in (and out of) the courtroom by watching his example. I could not have had a better mentor or friend, and whatever success I had in my career can be traced back to his influence.

We also had a fun relationship. I called him "Stottski" and he never tired of reminding me, even decades later, that I would always be just a "rookie" to him. I will miss him, and never forget him.

Dear Stotts. I am so sorry for the loss of Bob. My dad loved serving with Bob in the church. Bob anonymously gave a gift card for my dad to have a new suit.
Bob was also a great institute leader. He told me to start where I was and the Lord would take care of the rest.
I bet my dad is grateful to see Bob again as a fellow high priest. My dad came home one Sunday and was impressed with Bobs willing gift to the Savior. He said he would be willing to prosecute anyone for the Lord.
Thinking of you. Margi

A Journal entry from Nov 2018

On Monday´s bus ride home from work, the bus was crowded and I ended up sitting next to an older gentleman. Because of my large frame, I generally try to sit alone. Having to sit by someone is an annoyance. When forced to do so I generally avoid eye contact.

The ride home takes about 35 minutes and I passed it playing solitaire. I like solitaire, but I get a little embarrassed playing in front of others because it seems like such a waste of time.

As I approached my stop, I looked toward the stop cord and noted that the man next to me was sitting forward and in the way of my reach. As I considered asking him to pull it for me or getting up and pulling it on my way to the front of the bus, my gaze fell on his face and for the first time I noticed that I knew this man. I knew him well. He had been among my favorite youth leaders and we had maintained a good relationship over the years.

Now I was truly embarrassed. I had just spent the last 35 minutes avoiding my friend instead of enjoying his company. We might have shared stories of current life events or reminisced about past adventures. I felt a palpable loss for letting my selfish thoughts rob me of the joy of friendship and happy memories.

The man was Bob Stott. Since then we have spent several bus trips in great conversation, sharing recent experiences and recounting his missionary activities at the Church History Library.

Over my law enforcement career w/Salt Lake City Police´s Detective Div.,, Bob "screened" & prosecuted many cases that I investigated. While we were discussing each case within the confines of his office, we exchanged many pleasantries & casual talk about our families, world politics, etc. But when Bob would emerge from his office with case work under one arm, & walk across the street to a court appearance, he would put on his "game face" and become "Robert Stott, Esquire, Prosecutor Extraordinaire" After retiring from SLCPD to become the Chief of Police at (then named) Utah Valley Community, & later State College, (now named Utah Valley University) I would occasionally run into Bob at conferences & let him know that I very much missed my weekly or (sometimes more often) visits over to the Salt Lake County Attorney/DA´s office in which I´d often see Bob. He will be missed by many... Bob´s wife & children, unfortunately, will never ((entirely)) realize the ENORMOUS, & POSITIVE IMPACT on our societies efforts to maintain law & order that Bob´s professional conduct as a prosecutor created.
Rest In Peace Robert! .....
Respectfully,
Ron Greenleaf,
retired law enforcement.

Thank you for sharing Bob with our prosecution community. There's no way to fully appreciate how many prosecutors he trained and mentored or the influence for good he had. I loved watching him train with nothing more than a yellow, always yellow, legal pad for notes. He was a master. We have missed him since his retirement but will always have fond memories of his graciousness, civility and friendship. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I worked in the DA's office for 10 years in a support staff position. I became good friends with Bob and I admired and respected him a great deal. Deanie, we met once in a chance encounter at Home Depot. The few minutes we chatted I could tell you and Bob were a perfect couple. My heart goes out to you.

My sincerest condolences to the Stott Family. I had the privilege and honor to be one of the almost young lawyers who grew up under the wing of Bob. I have 28 yrs of fond memories and much respect for Bob while working at the DA's Office. Keep on "truckin" friend.

I'm so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I grew up with Lynley but never knew Bob until I attended the Rock Chapel Singles Ward. He was the high councilman assigned to the ward and I spent many Sundays with him in meetings. I really admired him and enjoyed being in the meetings with him.

As a young prosecutor years ago, I quickly learned that there was a small cadre of well known and well respected prosecutors that virtually every prosecutor in the state knew, or knew of. Bob Stott was one of those. He was a true example, and it's hard to overstate how important that is.

Saddened and stunned to read about Bob's passing. He was always a class act. Great lawyer tough as nails. We tried a number of homicide cases against each other. Emotionally charged and stressful death penalty cases. Bob was the anchor in the storm. He treated all with fairness and dignity. We always remained friends during and after our court room battles. Taking the high road was Bob's calling card. He was a great and caring human being. My heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and many friends.

I will always remember Bob as a dear neighbor and youth leader. For years he was our Young Men´s softball coach and we always benefited from his encouragement to do our best and to win and lose with grace. He was the finest of mentors.

When I later became a federal law enforcement officer, I began to learn of the scope of Bob´s great service as a prosecutor and the respect he had garnered among his colleagues in the legal profession.

My prayers are with the Deanne and their many fine children and grandchildren.

During my 30 + years in police work I had many of my case investigations assigned to Bob. I recognized early on what an outstanding lawyer he was but more importantly what a genuine nice guy Bob was. I offer his family my sincere condolences to them.

I am deeply saddened by Bob's unexpected passing. Bob was one of my dearest friends. He and I joined the criminal division of the then County Attorney's office at the same time so many years ago. He will be greatly missed. God bless you my brother.

Bob was one the best prosecutor I ever knew and I am thankful for all of his hard
work and dedication. This man made sure some of the worst criminals found justice.

Bob was an opponent for many years. He was the kind of lawyer that all of us should strive to be. He was fiercely dedicated to his cause but never indulged in personal attacks. He was outstanding in the courtroom and a funny and friendly guy outside of it. No one who knew him will forget seeing him walking the streets of Salt Lake at the noon hour listening to who knows what, oblivious to the traffic around him. I learned much from him about what really matters about being a lawyer who deals with people in times of crisis, how to be an advocate and not lose your sense of decency. I consider it an honor to have been his friend.

Dear Stott Family:

I am a criminal defense attorney who has known your husband, father and grandfather for 30 years. He was a phenomenal litigator and prosecutor who earned the respect of defense counsel, judges and everyone in the courtroom. It was always a tall order to go up against the mighty Bob Stott. More importantly, he was kind and decent and will be sorely missed.
Sending my love and prayers your way during this difficult time.

Bob was a mentor to me for the 16 years we worked together at the DA´s Office. But more than that, he was a friend. He was a tremendous example of how someone could achieve excellence as a prosecutor and husband/father/grandfather at the same time. Anyone who knew Bob is a better person because of it. Godspeed, my friend.
