Grandpa was a living legend, a person whose life seemed to leap from the pages of folklore and myths to serve as my flesh-and-blood hero. He worked hard his whole life, waking early to move irrigation pipes, to feed cattle and do innumerable chores required to run a ranch / farm. He tamed horses and soil to his will, and I never wanted to cross him because he seemed to harness the very powers of nature. He was so dependable that I never realized that grown men had a choice whether or not to support their families, live the gospel, or be faithful to family values. Until I was grown and saw men spin their own families into chaos by their bad choices did I get a great sense of the choices Grandpa made day after day to be faithful in every sense of that word. He was also a loving man. He took time to listen to me talk about my little problems. He helped me succeed in college. He encouraged me to make good choices. He was always the personification of the heritage I feel as a decendant of Utah pioneers. My roots run deepest back through his lines, his land, and his faith. He will always be the face of moral character to me, and I hope to bring that heritage to my children by telling them about their Great- and-Grand great grandfather, Ward Webb.
