Rula Dickson Obituary

Rula Fern Babcock Dickson

1933 ~ 2023

Our beloved Rula Fern Babcock Dickson passed away on March 4th, 2023.

Rula was born on October 17th, 1933, in Lapoint, Utah to John Reed Babcock and Eva Fern Rasmussen. She attended West High School where she met and started dating her future husband James R. Dickson (whom she lovingly called JR). After graduating from West High School, she attended the University of Utah. Rula and Jim, already inseparable, were married on December 20th, 1957. They later were sealed as an eternal family in the Salt Lake Temple. Their marriage was as beautiful as it was long; they truly are each other's soul mates, enjoying over 65 wonderful years together.

Culturally and intellectually, Rula found many passions. She was an avid reader in multiple genres of literature, as well as a lover of classic movies. Her favorites being Gone with the Wind and The Sound of Music, which always brought her great happiness. Rula enjoyed the opera, symphonies, and plays all which she attended regularly. Community was important to Rula. Not only as an enthusiastic beneficiary, but as a well-respected benefactor. Most notably, she was a lifelong fan of the University of Utah and its athletics programs. Jim and Rula were together President's Club philanthropists and contributors to the Deseret Foundation of Intermountain Healthcare in support of medical research and philanthropy. Her love and service to her community inspired friends and family near and far.

Not only charitable, Rula was an active spirit. She was athletic in life, earlier as a skier and later as a determined golfer at the Salt Lake Country Club. It was also there where she sported a competitive and clever hand at Bridge. Above all, Rula's greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She loved to entertain with successful and lavish events where she was hostess and chef. All who knew her would say that her personality was unfailingly funny, graceful, passionate, and outspoken.

Our wife and mother is a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she found joy and comfort in the promises of eternity and service to her family and community.

Rula is survived by her husband of 65 years, James R. Dickson Jr. and four children: James H. (Sydnee), Thomas R. (Tanja), Patricia Ann Douglas (Sean), and Carol Lyn Dickson (Mike Fisher). Rula is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Rula was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, brother, and great granddaughter. She owned and adored several dogs throughout and to the end of her life. Rula was fiercely loved and will be missed by all.

Services will be held Saturday, March 11, at noon in the Mount Olympus Ward (3862 East Oakview Drive), and visitors may come from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Interment and graveside services to follow at Larkin Sunset Lawn (2350 E 1300 South). Visitation will also be available at Larkin Sunset Lawn on Friday, March 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I'm sad to hear about the passing of my Aunt Rula. Living here in California, I never had the opportunity to visit her. I always remember how she always had an caring interest in me. And so fun to talk to, the last time 2007 at my Father's service. Blessings now in your family's sorrow. Robert Allsop

I am sad to hear of Aunt Rula´s passing. She has been a bright spot in many lives, including mine. I have admired her grace, natural beauty, and modesty throughout my life and to my eyes that gracefulness and charm never faded. I am sorry we won´t be able to attend her funeral in person but grateful we can attend through Zoom. Uncle Jim and family, Lynn and I send our love and condolences.

I grew up across the street from the Babcock family and enjoyed fun playing games with Rula and
Eva. They were both so much fun playing jacks and hopscotch. Learning to put on makeup and playing ball in the street. I tried to give my children the same experiences as we had. Much love to Jim and your family
