Theil Hatt Obituary

Theil Fredrick Hatt

March 19, 1938 - January 30, 2024

My entry into this life took place on March 19 1938. I was born in Murray, Utah as the second son of Rulon Stanley Hatt and Elsie Ruth Winward. I was raised in South Jordan, Utah. I had three brothers, Royal Gary, Stanley Kent, and Howard Peter. Both Gary and Kent preceded me in death as well as both of my parents. I graduated from Jordan High School in 1956.

At age 19 I received a mission call to the Central American mission and served there in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Costa Rica for 30 months. After my release I met and married ArLou Ostler in the Salt Lake Temple, and we were the parents of nine children, Kathryn, ReNae, Richard, Paul, Tamara, Jason, Rodrick, Stanley and Cynthia.

I had various employment opportunities but ultimately joined the JCPenney Company where I worked the last 27 years of my working career. My position at the time of my retirement was as an Energy Conservation Engineer. This job position took me into Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, Montana, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee. I retired in February 1998.

I've always loved music and especially the pedal steel guitar which I played for over 60 years.

I cherish my membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and have served in many positions within the Ward and Stake in priesthood leadership, missionary work and teaching. The calling I most cherished was to serve as an ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple, and The Oquirrh Mountain Temple.

I also had the good fortune to be married to Pauline Lee who is my best friend and the most special person in my entire life. I'll greatly miss her personal companionship and will be anxiously waiting for her to join me on the other side. We were sealed in the Atlanta, Georgia Temple. Pauline's daughter Kristy Hansen and her son Brad Wixom are both sealed to us. I am blessed to be part of her extended family and be called Grandpa. Pauline and I served together as Temple Ordinance workers and count it a special blessing.

Following our retirement from JCPenney Company, in Knoxville, Tennessee we moved to Centerville, Utah and later to Herriman, Utah where we resided at the time of my death.

A viewing will be held on Monday, February 5 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Home at 1007 West South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, Utah.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 6 at 11:00 am at the Mirabella 1st Ward Chapel at 14172 South Emmeline Drive, Herriman, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral from 10:00-10:45 am.

Burial will be at the Centerville City Cemetery in Centerville, Utah.

Oh Thiel, I just found your obituary today March 1st. I've known you since the mid sixties when you became the steel guitar player in my Dad and Mom's - Everett and Gloria Phister - country band "The Buckskins" along with Larry Banks at lead guitar and me struggling to learn the drums. Then again several years ago playing for the copperton ward Chilli cook-off. So many wonder places we played music. You are a super talent at the steel guitar. And a wonderful old friend. Now you can play heavily music to those you serve and teach on the other side. Dan Phister

Way back in the late 60's Thiel lived in my L.D.S. ward. I had just started to play "at" the guitar a couple years before. Got to see a band he was in at a ward party, and finally about 10 or 15 years ago, I had the privilege of actually performing with him on 2 or 3 occasions. His knowledge of music theory was great. He would cue me on the chord changes on songs I wasn't familiar with. I really looked up to him and his talents.

Mr. Thiel was a life long friend. We both loved the Steel Guitar and that is how we met. The best thing about Thiel was his knowledge of the Scriptures. I will miss our conversations about the Gospel and his superior insight. Those on the other side will love being taught by him. Our loss is their gain.

We had such a a great time taking his Buick to car shows and cruise ins.
We could talk about cars and music for hours.
Thiel had may experiences throughout his life. He could relate those stories so beautifully.

I look forward to talking with him again. Thanks Friend!

I remember working with Thiel at the JC Penney on 2nd South and Main back in the early 1970's. He was great individual and easy to work with. He was the type of person who defined himself as a good representative of the Lord.
