Thyra J Nilson

1949 ~ 2021

Thyra Jo Nilson, age 72, died peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at her home of 22 years in South Jordan, Utah on September 17th, 2021, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Thyra was born on the thirteenth of April 1949 in Roseburg, Oregon to James and Aletha Garlick. She is preceded in death by her parents and survived by her husband of 45 years, Michael Nilson, their three children, Kersti (Vince), Peter (Caitlin), Kate (Justin), and by 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild, as well as her brother, Don (Jeanne).

Thyra served in the US Marine Corp from 1967 to 1969. She graduated from BYU in Provo with a degree in youth leadership and outdoor education. She and Michael were married in the Washington DC temple on December 20th, 1975. She spent many years working in the public education system in a variety of capacities. At 18 years of age, she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and has been an active and devout member for 54 years.

In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Thyra had a passion for hiking, camping, and outdoor survival. She always loved trees, leaves, and being outdoors. These skills and values she passed on to others when called, multiple times, as the girls camp leader as her church role. Thyra was a woman of many talents; from the cross-stitch projects she made and gave to friends and family to add warmth and love to their homes, to her delicious zucchini bread, made from the vegetables in her garden.

Thyra had a bright and energetic personality, and she was known for befriending those in need. She touched many lives with her generosity and service. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Friends and family are invited to Thyra's viewing from 9:30-10:45 AM at the 10th Ward Glenmore Stake Church meeting house located at 4881 Cindy Lane, South Jordan, Utah on Tuesday, September 21, 2021. Services to follow from 11:00 AM to Noon.
