TONY POLYCHRONIS Obituary

Tony Polychronis 1938 ~ 2010 Anthony (Tony) Polychronis Jr. died Nov. 24, 2010 in Salt Lake City. He was born to Anthony and Sophie Kyriopoulos Polychronis, May 9, 1938, in Park City, youngest of five children. He was big, strong and fierce. He helped South High win its first state football championship, and became an all-conference guard at the University of Utah. He played in the Hula Bowl and the Shrine Game, was recruited by the New York Giants and Oakland Raiders, and played professionally for the Toronto Argonauts. He had throughout his life the presence of a down lineman. Tony joined Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and defined the spirit of the house. He was smart, funny, irreverent, convivial, and loyal, a fearsome goat master, a story teller, always ready to stay up until morning and talk with his friends. When he died, old PiKaps circulated an e-mail: "The Great Man is dead." He received a B.A. and M.A. from the U, served in the Peace Corps in Cyprus, coached football at Lompoc High in California, Highland High, the University of Utah, Westminster College, and Boise State University. He sold real estate, and worked for the Salt Lake County Assessor's Office. With the on-air name of "The Old Man," Tony hosted the "Bluegrass Express" on Radio KRCL, and became Utah's Bluegrass impresario, promoting concerts, and organizing festivals. Tony knew 70 years of songs, led singing at parties, and sometimes played the guitar, with more enthusiasm than musicianship. As a Ute football fan, Tony traveled with the team, served as a spotter for Bill Marcroft broadcasts, organized coaches' camps and clinics, and was a founding member of the Crimson Club. He felt unable to attend games at BYU, as campus police there were still on the lookout for him. Tony's parents and his brother Johnny died before him. His brother Tom and sisters Theresa and Elaine still live. Special thanks to Dave Keller, Mike Evans and Sue Taylor for friendship and visits during his declining years. A celebration of Tony's life will be Monday, Dec. 6, at Rice Eccles Stadium Tower, Gate C. Open house 1:30 p.m., Memorial 2:15 p.m., free parking in West Stadium lot. Donations may be made in Tony's name to the Crimson Club, or the Parkinson's Foundation in Research Park.

Although I never met Tony in person, I felt close to him. In fact, I was thinking of him just the other day, and was going to give a call. Guess I won't need the phone any more. Tony, you will be missed more than you will ever know and I am sure there are many in line to tell you. Keep playing your great music! And remember, you are loved - always and forever.

Tailgating and Ute football will never be the same again. More than half the fun of going to games was to spend time with Tony. A trip to UNLV for an away game is something I'll never forget. On top of all his other talents Tony gave the best hugs and was a very generous kisser......men like him are rare. God Speed Tony!

I had "Polychronis" for Sociology at Highland & I remember him as a BIG, big, man. He was a presence & one of the few teachers I truly remember, and fondly. I had no idea of his amazing history in football. He was great for Highland. Sounds like he had a great life, & people who admired & loved him.

Under a persona of irreverence and humor was a deeply reverent and value-centered person. A guy who taught, by example hard work, keeping commitments, pride, and compassion.
I am grateful to have been able to "ramble " with you for all of those 50 years Tony-I-O. Teaching at the same time in Lompoc/Santa Barbara, Birthdays for Greek food, music conferences together in Canada, and around the USA, and recently hanging out those winters in Palm Springs. The memories...
Say " Hi " to Chestang, Ras, Panda, Brickey and other Brothers and friends. We will be joining you too soon.

Words can't express my feelings. Tony was a bull on the outside, and a teddy bear on the inside. I'll always be greatful for everything that he did for me and for the music scene here in Utah. Many doors have opened for many people because of Tony. He'll be missed.

Tony and Family:
I was sorry to read that you are no longer with us physically, but you will be in our hearts. I'm not certain exactly what Polychronis means in Greek, but to me it's time eternal and so you will remain to all of your many friends.

My husband Jerry Kosovich served with Tony in the Peace Corps in Cyprus and they remained friends for life. We visited with Tony whenever we were in SLC. Jerry passed away in November 2009 and I would like to think that he and Tony are somewhere reminiscing about their adventures in Cyprus, Boise, or SLC.

I knew I had pledged the right fraternity when I met Tony. No one can forget the antics of Fred E. Garage, the late night "discussions", or Tony being Tony. I will always remember him coming off the L.A. Coliseum football field to standing ovation after a battle with UCLA years ago. What a great guy! Thanks for the memories. You will be missed!
