Robert Andrews Obituary

Robert (Bob) V. Andrews passed away at his home on National Trails Highway in Daggett on March 29, 2011 at the age of 89, just nine days short of his 90th birthday. He was born on April 7, 1921 in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Vern and Irene Andrews. He was the third of four sons, Keith Rathbun, Bernard Andrews and the youngest, Jim Andrews. He was predeceased by his parents, his three brothers, his wife Ethel of whom he was married for 65 years, and two daughters, Barbara Killebrew and Ginger Andrews. He is survived by his daughter, Sandra K. Rathbun and her, husband Ernest, of Daggett; son, Thomas R. Andrews and his wife, Diane, of Newberry Springs; youngest son, Richard W. Andrews of Daggett. He has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Bob was raised in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he learned his trade as plasterer and cement finisher. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943 and spent much of his service time in Italy. In 1952 he moved his family to Route 66, in Minneola (now Daggett) where he built and opened a small restaurant and beer bar, named the ÔBlue MoonÕ, next to his father and mother in-lawÕs Mobile Station and garage, on Route 66. He continued to work in the construction business. In 1956 he worked for the Marine Base as a cement finisher. He retired in 1977. In the early sixties he and some friends decided they needed an American Legion in Newberry (now Newberry Springs). He spent many hours helping to make money and hours of labor to build a club of their own. He was Commander twice and held several other offices, and continued to support the Legion to the extent that his wife threatened to move his bed down to the Legion, of course she never did. He was a fifty year continuous member of the Newberry American Legion Post 751, and continued to go there as many days as he was able, his second home. Celebration of Life and Post Everlasting will be held at the Newberry American Legion Post 751, on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. There will be a pot luck dinner after the services. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Loma Linda University, Division of Human Anatomy; Bodies for Science Program, 24760 Stewart St., Loma Linda, CA. 92350, would be appreciated.
