Felipa (Phil) Anna Gonzales Sinnwell, 91, passed away on Sunday, November 10, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, IA. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John's Basilica on Thursday, November 14, at 10 a.m. Visitation will be held at St. John's Basilica on Wednesday from 5 - 7 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Felipa was born in Waterloo, IA, on Sept. 11, 1922, to Maria and Trinidad Gonzales. She was united in marriage to Ray Sinnwell (deceased) on September 9, 1944. While raising eleven children, Felipa earned her nursing degree and worked at Broadlawns Hospital. After she retired, she continued part time employment at Broadlawns. Felipa enjoyed sewing, knitting, and playing bridge, but her passion was always her family and her faith. She was known for her homemade pies and tortillas. Felipa was a member of St. John's Basilica for 50 years and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society.
Felipa is survived by her daughters, Dianne, Cathy Brown (Jerry), and Theresa Sheerin, and sons, Ron (Debbie), Phillip (Karen), Don (Kathy), David (Pam), Larry (Nancy), Joe (Tracey), and daughter-in-law, Willie Sinnwell. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, brother, Henry Gonzales, and sisters, Virginia Hurtado, Marguerite Ortiz, Juanita Rowell, and Beatrice Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her sons, Dennis and Ken, her son-in-law Jan Sheerin, her parents, her stepfather, Toribio Ortiz, and her sisters Rose Rendon and Maria Sandoval.
Felipa's family would like to thank her many friends who visited during her illness. We would also like to thank Dr. Molina and his staff and Mercy Hospice for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Basilica or Mercy Hospice. Online condolences will be welcomed at IlesCares.com.
