Harry Sherman Obituary

Harry Bradford Sherman Jr

Pleasant Hill

Harry Bradford Sherman Jr. aged 94, passed peacefully from this world on Monday, February 6, 2017. Harry was born on March 29, 1922 to Beulah and Harry B. Sherman Sr. in Kansas City, MO where he grew up and attended school.

He attended East High School in K.C., MO, and it was during his first year of college that he met his future bride, Thel Gehring. Being a patriotic American of his generation and having already participated in the ROTC during his high school years, Harry quickly joined the Army at the outset of WWII. While home on leave in December 1942, he and Thel were married.

Harry was commissioned as a Lieutenant, played the trumpet in his unit's military band, and was accepted into the Army Air Corps; he began his training as a pilot in 1944; he flew P47 and P51 aircraft in the Pacific Theater.

At the conclusion of WWII, Harry and Thel returned to Kansas City where Harry began his career in the rail road industry, beginning with the Frisco, then the Great Western and finally retiring from the Chicago North Western in 1985; a career that spanned over 38 years.

Harry has three children, Cheryl (David) Perry, (Sierra Vista, AZ) Pamela (Leon) Sherman-Johnson, (Peyton, CO) and Michael (Stacey) Sherman, (Urbandale) and a grandson, Cory Sherman-Johnson.

Proceeding Harry in death were his wife of 59 years, Thel, his sister Janet Cameron, and his much-loved granddaughter, Carrie Lynn.

Harry loved his family, his faith, and his country; he also loved a beautiful spring day, breakfast with his friends, an enjoyable car ride to the Amana Colonies for lunch, and being at home in Ankeny, but - he especially loved music and dancing. His favorite pastime was square dancing and we, his family, would like to thank his many friends for the wonderful time he spent in your company, enjoying being a member of the local square dancing community.

It was through square dancing that Harry met Barbara DeAngelo, and they were married in 2007. Together they enjoyed many trips and adventures -and of course- square dances. They also enjoyed family gatherings and events with Barbara's children, Vincent, Christopher, Matthew, (DeAngelo) and Stephanie, (Agee) as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Barbara survives Harry in their residence at The Shores Assisted Living Community in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.

Harry's family invites you to join us for a Mass in celebration of his life at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart church in Ankeny on Thursday February 9th at 10:30AM.

My condolences to the family and especially Mike and spouse that I have known for many years. Your dad was always a hero to me because of his service as a fighter pilot during WW 11. and his advise to me to keep dancing as long as I could, because he enjoyed it so much. I will remember him sitting out in the garage smokin a big cigar and keeping our neighborhood and his home in excellent condition. God Bless you Harry.
