Jeff Zimpleman Obituary

Jeff Zimpleman

Richmond, Virginia

Jeffrey Michael Zimpleman, of Richmond, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly while traveling in Germany on May 29, 2014. He was 36 years old.

Jeff was born in Des Moines in 1977 to Larry and Kathleen Zimpleman, grew up in Clive, and graduated at the top of his class from Valley High School in West Des Moines in 1996. He went on to earn a degree in chemistry with honors from Dartmouth College in 2000, received a master's of science degree in the same subject from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California in 2004, and his master's of business administration from Cornell University in 2006. He worked as a financial analyst for Ansell, an Australian manufacturer, and Capital One Financial Corporation, where he worked on algorithms to improve security measures for credit card customers.

Jeff was an avid world traveler, who visited six different continents, traveled north of the Arctic Circle, and made frequent visits to both Germany and Brazil. He also loved to Jet Ski, sail, and parasail during his travels and at his family's home in Kona, Hawaii. When not traveling, he was a frequent moviegoer, a big fan of "The Simpsons," and an invaluable resource for his younger brothers and cousins who needed help understanding their science and math homework.

He is survived by his parents, Larry and Kathleen, of Cumming, Iowa, his brother, Christopher, of New York, New York, and a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas Zimpleman and Anne King, of Washington, D.C, and his Grandmother, Arlene Zimpleman, of Williamsburg, Iowa. Jeff is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who were very important in his life.

A celebration of Jeff's life will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Norwalk (720 Orchard Hills Drive) with a visitation from 5 pm-7 pm on Thursday, June 5, and a Mass at 11 am on Friday, June 6.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of Jeff may be made to Anawim Housing, Children and Families of Iowa, and Partners in Health.

Oh dear! I just found out about this! I try to imagine and feel what your family is going through....But, of course, I cannot. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your great loss.

I don't know him but he was special. Be so proud because it's written all over him. This was a great kid. The world benefited from him in just 36 years, it was given and left on this planet for all to appreciate. His birth was not in vain or quickly taken. Jeff you are a great kid and we were all lucky to have you here. Take Care because we would have all loved to have had you as part of our families. Rest young man and your thought of often.
I was raised in Des Moines, born in 1947, went to Roosevelt High School and know that good people come out of my hometown. I had a daughter, not a son but I would have loved a son like yourself.

What a bright star. I'm a native of Des Moines and so as a new retiree I now go into the news of Des Moines to check on things. Your son was a purpose driven young man and I know you are proud. I love his look. It's an honor to have him visiting the planet, he left I'm sure his mark on many. May he smile for that. I. Hawkins

Dear Larry and Kathi, I was so sad to learn that your son Jeff died recently. Please accept my heartfelt sympathies. God bless you, your sons, and extended family. Jeff sounds like he was a remarkable young man who was very gifted and talented, and had a very adventurous spirit. May your memories of his love, vitality, and shared experiences sustain you. Speaking as a mom who lost her own son before it was his "time," I pray you will find that your faith and love for one another will help protect your hearts as you navigate your way through your profound loss and grief. Please be patient with yourselves as you grieve--we heal in our own ways, in our own time. Please know that you are not alone--reach out to friends and family for precious support. May God's peace and strength be with you all, now and forever.

I am so sorry for your loss. To lose a child must be one of the most difficult of losses. Maybe find some solace in the Eskimo legend, “Perhaps they are not the stars, but rather openings in Heaven, where the love of our lost ones pours through and shines down upon us to let us know they are happy.”
