Joseph Hoffert Obituary
Winona, MN
Joseph B. Hoffert of Winona, passed away Friday, December 20, in Winona, Minnesota, at the age of 91. He was born on February 17, 1921, to Henry and Katie (Horner) Hoffert on a farm near Carleton, Nebraska. Following his high school graduation and a year at Kearney State Teachers College, he taught in a one room school for several years. He earned his B.A. from McPherson College and was a naval officer in the Pacific during the war. He married Lois Metsker on September 25, 1943. Following twelve years as a high school teacher and principal in Bird City, Kansas, Joe, Lois, and their four children moved to Des Moines in 1958, where he became a professor of mathematics at Drake University. He retired in 1986.
Joe was a faithful member of the Stover Memorial Church of the Brethren in Des Moines. He served that congregation, the district, and the denomination in many capacities over the years. In 2006, Joe and Lois moved to Winona, Minnesota, to be closer to their family. Joe is survived by, Lois, his wife of 69 years, and their children, Stan (Susan) of Wausau, WI, Gordon (Ulrike) of Winona, MN, Patty (Michael) Facius of Minneapolis, and Tim (Nina) of Golden, CO.
A memorial service will be held at the Lewiston Church of the Brethren, Lewiston, MN, on Friday, December 28, at 2 p.m.
