Ankeny

Judith Shaltanis, long-time Ankeny resident and well-known local piano teacher, died Wednesday, July 16, from pancreatic cancer at the age of 72.

A funeral service will be held 1:30pm, Saturday, July 19 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Des Moines where Judith served for 28 years as organist. Visitation times will precede the service at Trinity (12:30) and follow the Committal (3:00) at Ankeny Memorial Gardens.

During her 44 years of teaching piano in Ankeny Judith shared the love of music with over 600 students. She also played the flute, organ, recorder and later in life learned to play the harp. Besides music her other passions in life were her faith and her family. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dennis, retired vice principal of Ankeny High School, her sons, Rev. Mark Shaltanis (Theresa) of Falls Church, VA, Major Dan Shaltanis USAF ret. (Jennifer) of Silver Spring, MD and Rev. Joel Shaltanis (Phaedra) of Plano, TX, 8 grandchildren, and her brothers Norbert Seebach (Vernice) of Sioux City and Dr. Gerald Seebach (Judy) of Lexington, KY. Donations may be given in her memory to Concordia Seminary in St. Louis or the Taylor House in Des Moines. "I know that my Redeemer lives, and in my flesh I shall see God."

My thoughts and prayers are with all of Mrs. Shaltanis' family. Mrs. Shaltanis was an integral part of my love of music, which started with the piano lessons I had from her. She will be missed by many.
