Lawrence Plummer

Athens, GA

Lawrence "Larry" Plummer, 77, of Athens, GA passed away on Friday, June 12, 2013 from complications of pulmonary fibrosis. Larry was born in Des Moines, IA on May 19, 1936. He was the son of the late Donald C. and Mildred Plummer. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry at Loras College, Debuque, IA and his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Iowa. He completed two years of post-doctoral work at the University of Arizona. On September 9, 1990, Larry married Jeanne Marie Plummer in Wilmington, DE. Larry retired from the DuPont Company after a 36-year career as a research chemist spent at the company headquarters in Wilmington, DE and in London, England. Larry held numerous patents related to the development of polymers and their applications. He loved golf, gardening, woodworking/furniture making, photography, and his grandchildren, Bryant and Evan Shirreffs, also of Athens, GA. One of Larry's favorite pastimes was to attend Bryant and Evan's various sports' practices and games. He was a life-long Iowa Hawkeye and returned to Iowa often to cheer on his alma mater. Larry loved to travel and did so extensively throughout Europe. He was an avid reader and especially enjoyed reading about American history.

Preceded in death by his nephew Michael Plummer, Larry is survived by his wife, Jeanne Plummer, his brother Leo Plummer, sister-in-law Kay Plummer, his step-children Allison, Christine and John Shirreffs, daughter-in-law Lisa Shirreffs, son-in-law Rod Johnson, grandchildren Bryant and Evan Shirreffs, nephews Craig and Bradley J. Plummer, Patrick Johnson, Meghan Johnson, and Larry and Jeanne's canine companion, Puffy. A memorial service for Larry will be held at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home in Bogart, GA on Saturday, July 20 at 3 p.m. The family will receive visitors prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312. Our lives will be much less interesting without Larry. His omnivorous curiosity gave him incredible breadth --and depth--of knowledge and skills. His intellect was immense, but so was his artistry, his humor, and his generous loving nature. For Bob and me, Larry was not an in-law once removed but delightful family we looked forward to spending time with on our trips to Athens. We are lucky to have known him.
