ORVILLE L. ALLEN

Sarasota, FL

Orv was a kind, outgoing and a giving man. He passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 26, 2010.

Born in Grundy Center, Iowa on January 11, 1934, he attended the University of Iowa on a basketball scholarship and enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. Upon discharge, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Lee States, a union that would last 55 years. After earning his MBA, Orv coached basketball at Proviso West High School in Chicago.Orv and Nancy moved to Des Moines, IA where he rose to Vice President of American Republic Insurance Company.

During the 13 years in Des Moines, Orv was very involved with the YMCA and became Chairman of the Des Moines YMCA for several years. He also served as President of Junior Achievement and President of the Des Moines Golf and Country Club.Moving to Sarasota in 1977, he immediately joined the Country Club of Sarasota, which later became TPC at Prestancia. He maintained his commitment to the YMCA by becoming Chairman of the Board of the Sarasota Family YMCA.

In 1981, he founded Allen Real Estate Services, Inc.Orv was an Eagle Scout, Shriner, a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity and a member of Covenant Life Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife Nancy, children James of Tampa, Judith of Seattle and John of Sarasota and five grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be observed Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Covenant Life Presbyterian Church on Palmer Ranch at 8490 McIntosh Rd.

In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made in Orvs honor to the Sarasota Family YMCA Foundation, 1 South School Ave. #302 Sarasota, FL 34237
