Roger Horning Obituary

Roger Horning

Ankeny

The Lord called one of his faithful servants home Wednesday, September 28, 2011. Roger was a devoted Christian and lived his life on earth telling many people he met about his Lord and Savior. Roger lived to be 101 and enjoyed a full, productive life.

Roger was born to Fred Horning and Minnie (Hildreth) Horning on June 24, 1910. He married Dorothy Dunagan, his devoted wife, and to this union four children were born; Carolyn Ann Horning, Jean (Ken) Silver, Bill (Sandy) Horning and Stan (Deanne) Horning, all of whom survive him. Many grandchildren are left to honor his memory as well; Mark Silver, Mike Silver, Mike Horning, Leslie Horning Carlson, Adam Horning and Ashley Horning. He will be greatly missed by his three great-granddaughters, Shaylie Mariah, Celina Love and Amaia Ruth Horning. Roger was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years Dorothy Horning, and his sisters Mabel McIntosh and Irene Harris.

Roger was an avid sports fan enjoying the Yankees, Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes. He followed these games with passion until his passing. Roger began his career at the Ordinance Plant in Ankeny. He then founded Horning Electric and operated this business for over 40 years. Roger and Dorothy were charter members of the Bondurant Federated and Altoona Baptist Churches. He served as the first Sunday School Superintendent at Altoona Baptist. Roger was also instrumental in forming the Bondurant Little League Baseball Program.

The family will greet friends from 11 to 12 p.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th St. SW. Funeral services will be held at 12 p.m. at the funeral home with burial to follow at the Bondurant Cemetery.

Uncle Roger, you will be sorely missed my old pal.. I remember coming out to Bondurant, and eating fresh out of the garden when I was a kid with my brothers. And then after Aunt Dorothy, and her sister, my Granny, Margaret Sanford got sick, I used to bring them together at the Horning's to visit.. It was the BEST days of my life to see those sisters, carry on. I love you and miss you both, Roger, and Dorothy... From Bradley Curtis, son of Sandra Curtis, brothers, Donnie, Jeff and Rick Curtis, sisters, Peg, Debbie, and Shelley. From the Altoona Area. GOD Bless the Horning's, and the Sanford's...
