Wayne Kenneth Kolstead passed away Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Wayne was born February 20, 1929 to Melvin and Elizabeth (Kutchenwriter) Kolstead. He was baptized at the Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He attended First United Methodist Church in Iowa City and the First United Methodist Church in Sheboygan, Wisc. He was united in marriage on December 4, 1954 to Jane Kromrie.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane; two sons, Scott and Mark (Laurie); sister, Betty Smith; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Donald (Norine) Clayton of Greenfield, IA, Jim (Janet) Zimmerline of Stuart, IA, Elaine (Kenneth) Yarrington of Casey, IA, Dean Kromrie of Guthrie Center, IA; cousins, Evelyn Whetstine, Kenneth Eyman, John Rogers; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Glenn; and sister, Dorothy.

Wayne enjoyed wood carving, gardening, and thoroughbred horse racing. He also studied extensively on the Civil War and researched historical cavalry units. He was the Boy Scout leader for Troop 56, a donor for micro film research to Fort Sedgwick Museum in Julesburg, Colorado, and founder of the Central Iowa Treasure Hunters Club. He was a member of the 34th Reconnaissance Company of the Iowa National Guard in Iowa City for 10 years and retired in 1990 from John Deere in Ankeny as a Quality Control Inspector.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Hamilton's Altoona Funeral Home, 105 4th Street SW in Altoona followed by burial at Altoona Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, February 7, 2011 at the funeral home.

Wayne's family would especially like to thank Dr. Jose Angel and his staff, the staff at the Iowa Heart Center, and Mercy Hospice in Johnston for their continuous care and concern for Wayne.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston.
