A. Selman Obituary

A. Duane Selman, D.O.
July 3, 1950 - December 31, 2021
Arlington, Texas - A. Duane Selman, D.O. was a retired Emergency Physician. He graduated from L.D. Bell High School in 1968 and immediately began his service with Haltom City Fire Dept. while studying fire protection at Tarrant County College. In 1969, he joined the Hurst Fire Dept. as a fire fighter while studying criminal justice and became an arson investigator. In 1974 Duane was appointed the youngest fire chief in Texas at age 23 where he served until 1980. He was a member of the first paramedic class in Tarrant County and pioneered the use of ambulances by fire departments. His quest for more challenges led him to the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated in 1987. He later opened a Family Practice in Forest Hill where he treated many fire, police and EMT/Paramedics for 10 years. He then became an Emergency Physician for Medical City North Hills. He was very active in the Texas Osteopathic Medical Association where he served as Speaker of the House for many years and President from 2012-13.
He is survived by his wife Susan Selman; brothers Don and Dan Selman; sons Carter Selman and Weston Selman, and his spouse Diana; and grandchildren Ashlyn, Kinley, and Ryder Selman.
A natural leader with the patience of a saint, his smile and altruistic heart warmed all it touched. His memory will live on in our hearts and minds for generations to come. Rest easy Chief, your watch has ended.

Duane was a family friend/co-worker to my mom when I was growing up, and he was also my doctor. I have lots of childhood memories of Duane entertaining me at the fire station when I was waiting for my mom to get out of city council meetings, and countless memories of him caring for me when I was sick. The news of his death affected me much more than I expected, making me realize how special he was to me. I once learned that kids experiencing instability or something that could negatively affect the trajectory of their lives will often turn out just fine and be resilient if they have at least one other stable, caring adult in their life outside the home, checking in- an invested teacher or neighbor, etc. I´m realizing that, for me, this was Duane, which may explain why I remember wishing he was my dad at one low point, even though he was just my doctor and mom´s co-worker who I only saw randomly at their work. He was the community that filled the gaps. I am forever blessed by his memory.

Dear Susan and family, there is not enough words that can be said about Duane and his love he had for everyone. I was privileged to call him my brother, to work along side him making a difference in peoples lives for many years. I miss him so. His kindness, his laughter could make a difficult shift okay. Thinking of the lives he touched reminds me of this, "The hands of The Almighty are often found at the end of our arms". May the peace that passes all understanding be with you all.
