Derek, I still remember that little pink golfball you threw around for me when I was a toddler. I have a picture of my own daughter, now, holding out a little pink golfball to me. The. Joy in her eyes reminds me of the joy I felt being with you and your sisters. I think about you all so much..I miss you, I know you and Popi are reunited once again.

It has been almost 1 years since we lost Derek but he is lnog forgotten. He to this day is missed very deaply and we are stil getting over his death. At times it seems that he has just moved away and we are awaiting his return. On day we will all reunite again. The year we lost Derek we lost 2 other family members in the four months that followed so he was not alone and 3 months after his death I was with a child. Derek now has 5 neices Malia 8, Amya 3, Kennedi 7 months, Shai 17months and our newest to the family Laila 1 week old. She is our special one she was born 31/2 weeks early at 4 lbs. Thank you all who ever cared about my brother

I would like to take the time to thank everyone who has taken time out of their lifes to help and support my family through our hard times. Also thank everyone for including my family in their prayers, it's greatly appriciated!
Derek was the best brother, even more, my best friend. I'm so happy me and my brother got to get as close as we were before this all had to happen. Sure we had our disagreements, but what brother and sister doesn't. I know that the loss of Derek is also bringing some good. I know it's straightened me out alot. Also, all of his organs have been donated to help out others in need. I know that Derek will be greatly missed by me... he already is. And I know he will be missed by many others.
Sincerely,
keith cooper

Ms.sroufe words really can't explain how sad i am for you and your family.i lost my brothers last year so i know what you're feeling,i know he went way before his time, but the way i see it is he's up in heaven with god,he's in a place with no pain,no fears and no worries.i'll always remember the times me&him would hang out together and how much fun i had hanging out with him.believe it or not it hurts me almost as much as if i lost another brother, because of my past plans that would've made him my brother in law.i just hope you and everybody would try your best to stay strong, because i know for now on life in general becomes harder to deal with.i'll be praying for all you. GOD BLESS.

Tammy, I know there are no words that will bring you comfort, but the only thing I have is words to express my deepest sympathy. My heart aches for what you and your family must be going through. Your words at the funeral were so well spoken and touched me as a mother. If you ever need a shoulder to cry on or a friend to talk to, please know I will be there. I hope you and Ashlea and Jessica and Don know there are people here that care. If you ever feel the need, just reach out.

We grew to love you as part of our family and are saddened by your sudden and tragic death.
Don, Jessica, Ashley, Melia and Tammy, we can't find words to express our heart felt sympathy at this time. All of you had a special place in our hearts and home. Trying to accept the passing of Derek is difficult for us, so I know it is painful for you and your sorrow is our sorrow too. We will keep all of you in our prayers daily that God might help give you comfort in these days as He draws you closer to Himself, both in mind and body. Please give Him praise for all the good things and good times Derek was able to give you while also accepting God's grace to comfort you and help the pain to pass. Look to Him for hope, comfort and Salvation.
We love you deeply and will be with you in sorrow while the Lord helps us all to accept the loss yet look to the future with hope for better times.
Jessica, we want to specifically lift you up in prayer and ask God to comfort you and to help you to deal with your grief and help to remove the guilt. We don't know the whole story and really don't need to. We love you and will always be here for you. If you need us in any way, feel free to call on us. God bless and keep you.

no matter what "dennis the menice" stunt he pulled, he always came around to make things right. He knew that I had great respect for anyone who can admit their wrong, and do whatever they can to make it right. I am deeply saddended that it had to end in this way for such a beautiful young man.

I had not met Derek but a few times, my daughter Sheena and Jessica were friends through out middle school and some high school. I did know that Sheena had a crush on him for awhile, and even made a purple fuzzy pillow that said "I (heart)Derek. Tammy, Jessica and Ashley, I am so sorry for your loss, I could not even imagine, I don't want to ever have to feel that pain, but one thing that keeps coming to my mind is that God does not put more on us than we can handle. We have just got to trust in Him. Having just lost my nephew Scott just a few days before your loss, I can just get a glimmer of your pain and I hope that you do trust God to get each of you through this. May God Bless each of you. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
