Calvin Payne Obituary

Calvin Riley "Boots" Payne III died Wednesday evening, May 29, 2013, during his 78th year. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary at University Christian Church, 2720 S. University Drive, with the Rev. Larry A. Thomas, senior pastor of the church, and the Rev. Ellen Lewis officiating. Family and friends will be received in the church's Gallery immediately following the service. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to Project 44, 8309 O'Hara Lane, Fort Worth, Texas, 76123, www.project-44.org; R.L. Paschal High School; Cook Children's Hospital or to a charity of choice, in his memory, is suggested. Born in Fort Worth on Jan. 12, 1935, Boots was the son of Margaret and Calvin R. Payne Jr. On Feb. 13, 1954, he married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Beverly Snow. Boots graduated from R.L. Paschal High School in 1954 where he was captain of the district champion football team. He received a full football scholarship as a running back to Texas Christian University, which he attended until an injury shortened his collegiate career. Following college, Boots began a long, successful run in the restaurant business. In the 1960s and '70s he owned, operated and participated in restaurant ventures throughout Texas, including Zuider Zee in San Antonio, and Captain's Galley and Bigham's Smokehouse in Lubbock. His love for the barbecue business came through a close relationship with his friend and legendary pit master, Walter Jetton, who catered to U.S. President Lyndon Baines Johnson over the course of his political career. In 1983, Boots opened the doors to his first Cousin's restaurant on McCart Avenue in Fort Worth. He oversaw the subsequent 30- year expansion of the family-owned and operated venture, which currently includes six Cousin's Bar-B-Q restaurants, a thriving catering operation, and a commissary. In 1990, Boots expanded his brand of hearty fare and Texas hospitality internationally after Euro-Disney selected Cousin's as the "best representation of real, authentic American barbecue" and hired Boots to open Texas Bar-B-Q concepts in the European theme park. He was proud to have had the opportunity to serve both 41st and 43rd U.S. Presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush and their family on several occasions and enjoyed the recognition when, in 2008 and 2013, Texas Monthly named Cousin's Bar-B-Q one of the "Top 50 BBQ Joints in Texas." The passion for Boots' barbecue was only exceeded by the love people felt for the man himself. He exuded a positive happiness that drew people to him like a magnet. His smile was infectious; his work ethic inspirational. He was both a dynamic storyteller and an intent listener. As a family member recently said of Boots, "He had a grace through conversation - and he had God's favor in return." Boots elevated and inspired all those that came within his ambit. He genuinely loved the people in his life - his family, his friends, his employees, his customers, his teammates -with his Texas-sized heart. And a piece of him shall live on in all of them. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Zayne Ann Payne White and her husband, Robert. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Beverly, Boots is survived by his children, Corby Payne Crittenden and Steve, Clifton Payne and Regina, Mark Payne, Jeffrey Payne and Laura and Craig Payne and Deidre; grandchildren, Shannon, Candice, Jonathan, Maggie, Brian, Jordan, Rhett, Alex, Claire, Katie, Christian, Hope, Cooper and Greyson; great-grandchild, Hayden; brothers and sisters and their spouses, Betty Watson and Robert, Susan Sprinkle and James, Roger Payne and Sandra, and Wally Payne and Ann; and nieces and nephews and their families.

So sorry for the family and friends loss. We are big fans of Cousin's, not just for the excellent food, but the friendly atmosphere. Thank you, Mr. Payne for a great business. When our location moved from 1709 to Heritage, we were sad. However, the new location is bigger and has indoor eating. We've never been treated like money, but rather like friends. Rest well and peaceful.

I always thought of Bootsie as Zayne Ann Payne's little brother. I rembember the day that Zayne Ann came to school and told us that there was a new baby at her house. Zayne Ann was a dear friend and her entire family was (and is) so wholesome and hospitable. She and Bootsie are certainly missed.

What a trip down memory lane for me reading all of these comments. I remember Boots and his family when they had a place in Lubbock in the late 1970s called Captain's Galley--great fried catfish!! A buddy and I would eat there 3 or 4 times a week. And when going through the line, visiting with Boots and his family would always make you feel very welcome and right at home. Restaurant owners could learn a lot from these guys.

Cousins is a fantastic place to eat, but the atmosphere of family permeates the place. Seems like just yesterday Mr. Payne was manning the register, and what a friendly and nice guy. He was always smiling and loved and appreciated every person that came through the door. More importantly, his kids have the same traits, and it is fun to come to Cousins for the food, but to also chat with the boys, and for us, has been mostly Cliff and especially Craig. However, the entire staff treats us like guests. Mr. Payne may be gone, but not forgotten. His smile would always light up the day.

June 13, 2013

Our sympathy to the entire Payne family. We ate your Bar-B-Que for years when we lived it Ft. Worth, and try to go every time we visit. We shipped your sauce to friends from Oregon to Minnesota, and when our son was married in Florida, he wanted Cousins for his rehersal dinner - yes, we shipped it. Such a pleasant and friendly and family oriented man. June & Malcolm Hill, Tallahassee, FL

I was so surprised and saddened to hear of Calvin's passing. I can't add to what's already been written, but we have lost a great example of what a business proprietor should be. And his sons and daughter are testimony of what a fine example of a dad he was. The apples didn't fall very far from the tree. May the God of all comfort sustain you through this time of loss, Beverly, Jeff, Cliff and the rest of the family.

June 3, 2013

Cousin's is like eating at home with family. Every person that works there always smiles and greets you every time you come in and the reason for such kindness is because of a family man by the name of "Bootsie". May God bless you & family always and comfort you. Calvin will always be there with you and especially at Cousin's.

June 3, 2013

In 1985 our son Brian was very sick. Sometimes beginning to believe he may never be returning home. Miraculously he made a recovery after months in the hospital and months at home. Our Neighbors and Calvin's son, Cliff & Regina Payne lived across from us and knew what we had been through. Cliff mentioned to Calvin (Bootsie) about having a benefit for Brian and to assist on our medical bills. On Mother's Day 1985 Cousins would have been closed but Cousins Family opened location on McCart on their own time, using all volunteers taking in money and buying TV for Brains Bedroom where he spent most of summer. This is what Calvin Payne, Payne Family and Cousins BBQ Family are about, a gift that Bootsie & Beverly instilled in the Family and all their lifes they touched. My family will always be grateful to the Payne Family and their leader Calvin (Bootie) Payne. Your legacy will live on Bootie.
Sympathy and our Love to Family from David, Cindy, Brain & Tami Brooks and Tim & Leslie Brooks and our four little men, our grandsons.

Our deepest sympathies in the passing of Mr. Payne. We first met him when we went to Cousin's on McCart with Mother and Daddy, Marilyn & Dink Davidenko. After that Mr. and Mrs. Payne always asked about them. Mom and Zayne Ann (Bootsie's sister) were dear friends and Buddy and Daddy were always doing something crazy together. Just sure that Zayne Ann and Buddy were there to greet you again. Her with her beautiful smile and Buddy laughing that big ol' laugh. We will always love the BBQ and memories.
