I was deeply saddened to learn of his passing. Mr Watts was such an incredible person and band director. He led his students by example at a time when the world for Black people were making great strides to assimilate in a white oriented world. He pushed us for excellence and class. There was eloquence in his quiet demeanor. My heartfelt condolences to his family, and all who were fortunate to have known him.

Mr. Charles Watts, his brother and I, were in the band together at I. M. Terrell High School. Both of them were among the best of the best. Both were well loved by myself and the other Terrell students. RIP Charles

Mr. Watts was a very caring and outstanding person as well as a wonderfully gifted band director. He inspired band students as well as none band students with a desire to be the best. When seeing him in recent years he would always greet you with a smile, call you by name and share something inspirational with you. If you knew him you loved him. I know God has smiled and welcomed him home with open arms. Rest In Peace Mr. Watts and know that you are loved and will be missed.

I wasn't in band, however Mr. Watts would talk words of wisdom to the non band students. I loved talking with him for those short periods of time throughout my high school years. What a wonderful person.

Mr Watts was such a huge inspiration to so many students - I was at EHHS from ‘75-‘77 played flute and piccolo (Marching & Symphonic Band). Most memories of those HS days were of band - (Math English Science and History - all took back a seat to what we learned being in the band hall and all of the contests - football games and concert performances) and our mentor Mr Watts was always there guiding us through each of these events.
We loved him as our teacher and friend.
My condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends. I am so sorry for your loss.

When my mother passed away in 1985, Mr. Watts told me that we had not just lost a pillar of the community but we’d lost an institution. I can say the same thing now. We didn’t just lose a giant in the music community but we’ve lost an institution. My condolences go out to the family along with my prayers.

This man touched so many lives through band directing, but he was so much more than that to his “band kids”. He taught us by words and action about being a good person and being your best. The gift he gave us lasted well beyond our years in school. To our friends and family who never met him, he is a legend. They heard the stories. They know the love and respect we continue to have for him. They also probably heard some of his often-used sayings without knowing where they came from. His legacy lives through us and even beyond us. I will always love Mr. Watts and cherish my memories.
To his family my condolences. Our loss is I’m sure small compared to yours. He is loved.
