Dan Walker Obituary

Dan Walker, 81, sang loudly his way into his Lord's presence at 9:07 a.m. Wednesday morning, Sept. 16, 2009.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday at McKinney Memorial Bible Church. Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home.
Known nationally as the Flag Hero, Dan saved the American flag from the fiery flames of protesters at the 1984 Republican National Convention in Dallas. His actions led to multiple awards and tributes, but most dear to him was the personal letter from President Ronald Reagan commending him for his courage and love for Old Glory. A 1953 graduate of the West Point Academy, Dan served in World War II and the Korean War, retiring from the Army Corps of Engineers. Dan carried his love for music from the West Point Cadet Choir, to the Southwestern Oratorio Choir in Fort Worth. He served as deacon at McKinney Memorial Bible Church, but most faithfully fulfilled God's commission by his open demonstrations of love serving his God and Savior Jesus Christ, and as loving and devoted husband to his wife, Patty, and Hero Dad to his two sons, David, Rusty, and daughter Dana. Four "pride and joy" grandkids will miss their Papa.
Survivors: Wife of 52 years, Patty Walker; sisters, Francis Cooper and Patricia Durden; son, David Walker and wife, Sherry; son, Rusty Walker; daughter, Dana Purczinsky and husband, Dave; grandkids, Maggie, Nathan, Zachary and Hallie; and numerous nieces, nephews and awesome friends.

From knowledge of Mr. Walker's daughter, he was an incredible man with a devoted spouse. They nurtured a wonderful woman in their home and she continues to let the "light" shine in her home and in the Walker's treasured grandchildren. The angels rejoice with the new heavenly choir member. Love and peace to you all as you reconcile his going home.

Rusty I am so sorry for your loss, and egually sorry I was unable to be there for you at the veiwing and service, please know you were in my thoughts and prayers. I remember how much fun your Dad had with us the day he brought Cora over for a "playdate" with Milo. You truly had a wonderful Father.
Bless you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss. Dan was part of the Koinonia Cancer Support Group along with so many others of us. He will truly been missed. Whenever he attended meetings he brought song books for everyone so we could enjoy a sing-along before starting the meeting. He never told us about the flag incident but I am so proud of him for honoring the flag, this country and all who love it. My prayers are with you.
