George Beggs Obituary

George Beggs III passed away at home Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, during his 89th year. Service: 2 p.m. Saturday on the Farmer Beggs Family Plot in Greenwood Memorial Park. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, consideration of contributions to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, All Saints Health Foundation, Union Gospel Mission or a charity of one's choice, in his memory, is suggested. Born June 19, 1921, in Fort Worth on Summit Avenue, George was the son of Francine Capera and George Beggs Jr. He was raised on Mistletoe Drive and attended Lily B. Clayton school, Daggett Junior High and graduated from Howe Military School in Howe, Ind. George received his business degree from Babson Institute in Babson Park, Mass. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in northern Africa and southern Italy. Before departing for the Army in 1941, he started ranching operations with his brother, Ed Farmer Beggs, in Dickens, King, Kent, Garza and Parker counties. In the early 1960s he operated Artarque Ranch at Fence Lake, N.M., until he sold it in 1979, thus building on a ranching legacy that began in 1876. George married Janie Martin in 1950. Together, they raised their family and lived on Beggs Ranch in Aledo for over 60 years. He served on the boards of All Saints Episcopal Hospital, which his grandmother, Maria Dickie Beggs, help found, and the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show board for 50 years. He was also a board member of the former Continental National Bank. George was a lifelong member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ed Farmer Beggs; and sister, Deborah Beggs Moncrief. Survivors: In addition to his wife, Janie, George is survived by his children, Janie Beggs, Judy Capera Beggs Clement and her husband, James Higbie Clement Jr., George Beggs IV and Ed Farmer Beggs II; grandchildren, Capera Beggs Clement, James Higbie Clement III and Gregory Sayre Clement; and his sister, Francine Beggs Dwyer.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your father. May God grant your family peace during this time of grief. Saddest of all is the realization that America seems to produce fewer and fewer men of this caliber. I knew the reputation of the man and feel it incumbent upon me to be more like him when I deal with others. He is an inspirational legacy and we are blessed to know his story.
