George Campbell Obituary

George H. Campbell Jr., 89, died Wednesday, April 9, 2008.
Funeral: 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Euless, 1000 W. Airport Freeway. Interment: Grandview Cemetery at a later date. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home.
George was born Nov. 3, 1918, in Fort Worth. He graduated from Paschal High School and attended TCU where he was very involved in the music programs, writing and arranging varsity shows, and the marching band.
He was a loving husband, and married his college sweetheart, Nell Ann Davis in 1941. Their marriage was blessed with four children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Our daddy was a wonderful father and taught us there was great joy in both work and play. He loved our beautiful mother, and knew how blessed he had been to find her.
He was a bandleader in Fort Worth for over 50 years, and loved the people who danced to his music. He played for many of their weddings and funerals. He was a songwriter, arranger, pianist, and bandleader. He wrote the Jim Reeves country standard "Four Walls." His career took him to New York and Tin Pan Alley, and he wrote and arranged the music for the Copa Cabanna Club in 1955. Soon he decided to return to Fort Worth to raise his family and always said it was better to be a big fish in a small pond. His writing successes came after he moved back to Fort Worth.
In retirement he lived at his beloved farm near Grandview. He enjoyed playing for the Sunday schools, and sailed his boat on Lake Grapevine until he was 88.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George H. and Annie Campbell; one sister, Nadine Howell; and an infant grandson, Michael James Putrino.
We will remember him as a generous man who loved life, and lived it abundantly until Alzheimer's disease took his life. We want to thank the staff at Oak Hollow Alzheimer Care for their loving care of all of us. Also, thank you to his doctors, nurses and the wonderful people from Vitas Hospice who were there while Daddy peacefully went from this world to heaven.
Survivors: He is survived by a big, loving family, including his wife, Nell Ann; children, Gary D. Campbell and wife, Doris, Karen "Corky" Elkins and husband, Ted, Stephen Campbell and wife, Lynn, and Jan Putrino and husband, Dale; grandchildren, Sarah Campbell, Amy Cabaniss, Danny Haddad, Scott Campbell, Lauren King and David Putrino; six great-grandchildren; his sister's only child, Lynn Howell Teschner; and many wonderful brothers, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He loved his wife's family as his own.

Dear Corky and All The Campbells,
Your father was such a wonderful, fun, loving person and a great musician. I always remember a smile on his face. I think he was at every dance I ever went to. It was good seeing him at Pulidos about seven years ago. You have been blessed. You are in my thoughts with love and sympathy. I know you will miss him.

Corky,

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. I enjoyed reading about him and his life. Somehow, I forgot about "Four Walls" being one of his songs. What a great life he lived.

Uncle George-

All of your nieces loved you dearly. You brought our family together with music and joy. From holidays to weddings to just being in your music room in Grandview, we all loved just being around you. Even on our last Christmas together you still could play our favorite songs! We know you are with the angels and our Heavenly Father playing Four Walls for them all.

Love, your niece (Little)Jenny

Our condolences to the entire Campbell family, on the passing of their beloved patriarch George. My brothers and I have many fond memories of playing with Steve in our old neighborhood during the 1960's, and all the buzz of activity around the Campbell home on Selkirk Drive. I remember Mr. Campbell as a great musician, pecan farmer, and fine family man. Let us know if there is anything Marion and I can do for you all.

Nell Ann, I am so sorry that George is gone, but his memory will live on for years to come. He helped me many times with my music career and gave me many ideas about arrangements that I and my Band used. I know George wished, as do I, that good music and talent was still wanted. I will miss his music and friendship.

Hello George,
I could not have asked for a better Father in law. I always thought of you as my Father too!
We had some great times sailing together.
We shared a lot of activities at the FARM and in the pool cleaner business.
We cut wood at the farm and did keep the tractors going.
We also shared many an Italian meal/food together--ALL over the country, it seems.
I just loved to hear you play the piano--ANYTIME! I'll never forget you.
The memories ARE VERY VERY SPECIAL TO ME!--Thanks for the memories, Dale

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of George. He was a very dear friend of my father in law JB Brinkley. I can remember he was just about a part of every funny story JB had to tell and was so fondly thought of. Although I vaguely remember meeting him a time or two I know he was a wonderful person and will be greatly missed by all that new him. God bless you all.
