Hazel McDavid Obituary

Hazel Dawn Queen McDavid
March 19, 1918 - July 14, 2021
Weatherford, Texas - Hazel Dawn Queen McDavid was born March 19, 1918 and passed peacefully from this life into the presence of her Lord on Wednesday, July 14, 2021.
Funeral Service: 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2021 at The Brooks at Weatherford, 1185 W. Lake Drive, Weatherford, Texas 76087, with a reception to follow.
Interment: Oakland Cemetery in Weatherford.
Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in White's Chapel of Memories, 130 Houston Ave., Weatherford, Texas 76086.
Dawn was a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-grandmother. She was the beloved daughter of Zealand Simons Queen and Marvin Bishop Queen. Dawn was born in Georgetown, but she lived in Boyce, Louisiana until her family moved to Weatherford in 1932. She married Ben "Bill" Griffin McDavid on November 28, 1934 in Glen Rose. They had five children, Deddy Dawn, Bill, David, Kandy and Toni.
Dawn supported Bill in his dream of owning and operating an automobile dealership in Weatherford, and later as the dream grew when they moved to Houston in 1956 to start Bill McDavid Oldsmobile. The Texas emblem that he branded every car with was Dawn's idea.
Her favorite pastime was being at home with her family – her first and foremost loves. She wrote several children's books, "The Queen's Jewels" series, using stories from the lives of her children and grandchildren. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Weatherford. She had a deep and personal relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and she taught her family many stories from God's Word. Her deepest desire was that her family would know Jesus and His saving grace. Even into the last months she was able to recite the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm (and The Night Before Christmas).
Dawn loved her Louisiana roots and instilled that love in her children, but she was a Texan to the core. She loved New Orleans: the food, the Quarter, Café DuMonde, but most of all she loved the "blues" and jazz from Bourbon Street. Dawn also loved Texas, and raised her family to be Texans, through and through. She never understood why anyone would ever want to leave.
Known for her leather pants, boots and always a hat to top it off, she was never opposed to a big fur coat, regardless of the weather. Her favorite color was blue. She loved yellow flowers and star gazing on a quilt with her kids and grands on summer nights.
Dawn was the owner of several car dealerships, and the owner of Bull Goose Ranch for over 60 years.
March 19, 2018 was designated Dawn Queen McDavid Day in Weatherford, honoring her 100th birthday. She was a long-standing legacy member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Dawn is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bill; her daughter, Deddy Dawn; her son, Bill; her sister, Gloria; her granddaughter, Lisa; and her grandson, David.
Dawn is survived by her three children, David McDavid, Kandy Dawn Lamb, and Toni Rene' Williams and their spouses, Stacie, Wayne and Tim. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Andrea Waitley, Michele Napier, Bill McDavid, III, Brad McDavid, David McDavid, Jr., Dianne Cornelli, Jimmy McDavid, Jade Matlock, Duke Lamb, Paul David Williams, Kandy Hope Elder, Colt Williams, and Sterling Dorman; 38 great-grandchildren; 31 great great-grandchildren; and many others who loved her and knew her as Mommy Dawn.
Many thanks to her loving care-takers who served and loved her well: Alice Griffin, Wanda Carter, Preston Faggart, and of course, Ross Hull.
2 Peter 1:11 – "Then God will give you a grand entrance into the Eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."
This is her red-carpet moment.

I am sorry to hear about Dawn's passing. I have a memory of Dawn stopping by my Memaw's (Nolyne's) house down the street so they could have a catch up on each others children and grandchildren. I remember how cool she looked in her hats. I can picture the family reunion in heaven, everyone catching up on children and grandchildren. Thoughts and Prayers to you all.

Mrs. McDavid did not know me nor I her. However, in 1988, when we briefly lived in Weatherford close to Mrs. McDavid's, my 9 yr old son (Matthew) told me that he talked to the very nice lady on an intercom by her gate. Of course, I went and had him show me where he was talking to the very nice lady. I saw who the address belonged to and it was Mrs. McDavid's. I told him that it was alright to go to the gate and speak to her once in a while, but to not bother her. He told me that it didn't bother her and that she liked to talk to him. So, I guess they continued their daily conversations until we moved. That was so sweet of her to just talk to him. He obviously didn't know about the car dealerships, etc. and didn't not want anything but her friendship. He just knew that she was his friend. Matthew passed away in 2010 at the age of 31 yrs old. I hope that they have been able to carry on their conversations in Heaven. God Bless your family..

To Toni, Andrea and the rest of your family,
I cannot believe that, once again, you are saying 'goodbye' to a beloved family member in such a short time. This time, you have lost someone that was well-known and respected. One Christmas season, Mrs. McDavid came to our store to shop; but, she only wanted me to wait on her. I felt very special and had a good time helping her select gifts. She was always warm and kind and will not soon be forgotten. Many thoughts and prayers are with you all.
