Jacob F. "Jack" Zaves passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2012. Funeral Mass: 10 a.m. Saturday at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 2100 N. Davis Drive, Arlington. Visitation: 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Most Blessed Sacrament Church Chapel. Jack was born Jan. 23, 1936, and raised in Richmond Hill, N.Y., graduated from Westbury High School and Pace University. He served in the Air Force and worked at Esso International where he met the love of his life, Michael Ann Shannon. In 1966 he went to work for American Airlines and retired as managing director of fuels purchasing after 29 years. He was adored by his family and was admired and respected by his colleagues and friends. He will be greatly missed for his fun-loving, good-humored personality. He was preceded in death by his parents, Steve and Alice Zaves; and brothers-in-law, Buddy Eidel and Walter Beck. Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Michael Ann; son, Ken Zaves and wife, Jenny; son, Tom Zaves and wife, Holly; daughter, Kellie and husband, Dan Sobczak; grandchildren, Jake, Becca, Megan, Paxton and Avery Zaves and Ben, Emily and Chloe Sobczak; sisters, Natalie Eidel and Rita Beck; brothers-in-law, Kevin Shannon (Katya), Brian Shannon, Keith Shannon (Irene); sisters-in-law, Katie Keegan (Bob), Joan Shannon, Meg Hochstrasser (Jack) and Laurie Kaiser (Steve); and many nieces and nephews. Jack lived life to the fullest.

Jack was truly a wonderful man, and I was one of the lucky ones to work for him in the Fuel Dept. What a sense of humor he had. I keep remembering how he would call us into his office to look out at the baby birds that had hatched in the tree branches - and how one day we watched as they tried to make their first flight.
