James Byam Obituary
Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel at Moore Funeral Home, 1219 N. Davis Drive, Arlington. Interment: Moore Memorial Gardens.
Jim was a loyal son of his home state of Ohio, where he was born Dec. 19, 1930, in Elyria, but he grew to love his adopted home of Texas as well. He came to Texas when the Army assigned him to Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells in 1950. There he met the young lady who would become his wife of 55 years, Peggy Wooldridge.
Jim and Peggy began their lives together in Mineral Wells, but they soon moved to Waco so that he could attend Baylor University. He earned his B.A. in romantic languages. His love of learning and the desire to become a civil engineer led them to Austin, where Jim became a proud Longhorn. He received his B.S. in civil engineering. In 1957, he was initiated into the Masons and was ordained as a Baptist minister.
Although he worked in many professional settings, he spent most of his career with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Throughout these years, they lived in Arlington, San Antonio and Pipe Creek. After retirement, their family was thrilled for them to return to the Arlington area to be close to their children and grandkids.
Jim's interests and hobbies varied, but he approached them all with a passion. Some of his favorite pastimes included woodworking, pets, listening to gospel and bluegrass music, and fishing. He also loved to play golf, pool, ping-pong and a mean game of kick the can. Family camping trips were probably some of his most precious memories, and you could always count on Peep for a game of dominoes -- especially if he were winning!
Survivors: Children, Michelle Pringle (Mike), Mary Loftis (Scott), Robby Byam Jr. (Vicki) and Toni Pirotte (Travis); grandkids, Patrick Pringle (Kellie), Katie Blanchard (Alan), Megan Pringle, Autumn Gruene (Levi), Amanda Loftis, Colter Loftis, Justin Byam and James Byam III; and loyal dog, Hei.

Hello, Michelle,
You may not remember me, though we went all through school together. I've only just read about your Dad and I know you'll miss him so much (I lost my mother in April). I've been with HUD for nearly 20 years, but did not have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Byam. Perhaps he retired before I went to work there in 1988. My sympathies are with you and your family.

Dear Byam Family
After reading about your Dad,I am sorry that I was not able to know him better. I am truly saddened for all of you because I know now what a great loss this is for you. I feel so privileged that I was able to be a part of your lives and that I could be there when your sweet Dad departed this earth. May God bless each one of you, the family and the friends of such a great man. I pray that God comforts you with His peace.

Jim was a very special friend and wonderful person. Just thinking about him bring back many pleasant memories of our time together at HUD. He was our long ball hitter and inspiration leader on the softball team; the life of the party after every game; and when we were assigned to the Little Rock, AR HUD office, we established a very close bond, sharing much about our private lives as we commuted back and forth from Little Rock to Fort Worth. Dear Family,
I just wanted you to know I am thinking of you as you move forward.
I also wanted to share a favorite memory of Uncle Jim.
Once during our many "adventures" at the farm I got
what I thought was a gigantic splinter in my finger. I went back to the house crying looking for help. The only adult there was Uncle Jim. He sat me down in Grandaddy's bathroom and began telling me a tale. I didn't know till then that he was an extraordinary story teller. Before I knew it the splinter was gone, and I never felt a thing. I was amazed at his gentleness and have never forgotten how he rescued me that day.
