JoAnn Jenkins Obituary

JoAnn Cash Jenkins
December 30, 1927 - February 23, 2022
Fort Worth, Texas - JoAnn Jenkins, 94, passed away peacefully February 23, 2022, surrounded by family.
Family burial ceremony will be at Granbury Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held 2:00 p.m. on March 5 at Polytechnic United Methodist Church, 1310 S. Collard Street, Fort Worth.
Gifts in her memory may be directed to Meadowbrook-Poly United Methodist Church, 3900 Meadowbrook Drive, Ft. Worth, TX 76103 or to Texas Wesleyan University Advancement, 1201 Wesleyan Street, Ft. Worth, TX 76105.
JoAnn was born December 30, 1927, to Turner Andrew and Allie Cash Gunn in the Fairview community near Granbury. She was graduated from Granbury High School at age 15 and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Texas Wesleyan University. She obtained her Master's Degree in English at the University of Texas at Arlington.
As an educator, JoAnn taught English at Trimble Tech and Eastern Hills High Schools. She also taught English as a second language and tutored students after hours in her home. After retirement from public education, she worked in Christian education on the staff of Polytechnic United Methodist Church and later as a volunteer in the same field, chairing the Education Committee and teaching in the church school for many years. Other activities included United Methodist Women, church choir and two book clubs: Progressive Study Club and Entre Nous. Well-versed in civil and political discourse, JoAnn put words into action in civic and community affairs through organizations such as Tarrant Churches Together. JoAnn and her husband Ray embodied the term "Radical Hospitality" as they encouraged and supported people wherever they went, opening their home to numerous Texas Wesleyan University students and others they met along the way. Many international students lived with them and always found a loving, supportive home away from home which provided a safe, spiritual and educational environment.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 70 years, Barney Ray Jenkins; her sister, Kathleen Bruton; brother-in-law, Sumter Bruton Jr.; son-in-law, Ivan Kovac; and nephew, Turner Stephen Bruton.
She is survived by her children, Leslie Raye Garcia and husband, Arcadio, of Ft. Worth, and Dr. Leigh Ann Jenkins of Lubbock; grandson, Dr. Joseph Kovac and wife, Maureen, of Seattle; great-granddaughter, Anne of Seattle; nephews, Sumter Bruton III and William Jenkins and wife, Shauna, of Ft. Worth; cousin, Dr. Ruth Carmen Bryant of Denton; and an extended family of church and community friends.
The Jenkins family greatly appreciates the care given by Dr. Craig Dearden, Dr. Quang Le, Thao Nguyen, AGNP-C, Encompass Hospice and Handy Caregivers.

The memory that I'll treasure the most, is every Sunday morning in church, her greeting would be "God's peace"....I use that every day. So simple, but so beautiful.

So many wonderful memories not only of JoAnn but also of Ray and Mom and Dad Gunn - from being my youth counselors to my husband, Don, serving as pastor to the Gunn´s at Fairview/Granbury in 1954. As the years passed and I visited Poly Methodist, JoAnn always had a hug waiting.

Deepest sympathy on your loss. JoAnn was the kindest person along with her husband Ray. They both took our daughter Kayla under their wing when she first started at Texas Wesleyan and were always so caring and kind. We will never forget them. God bless.
