Joe Mahaney Obituary

Joe Temple Mahaney, M.D.
September 10, 1948 - January 28, 2022
San Antonio, Texas - On January 28th, Dr. Joe Temple Mahaney peacefully passed at the age of 73; he died in the presence of family and friends, surrounded by love and care in his San Antonio home. His long struggle with Lewy body dementia was over, and in death he has found eternal peace.
Joe was born on September 10, 1948, in Denton, Texas. He was an only child, beloved by his mother, and found a special love in life for all animals and people. Joe was well liked for his humor, and his undeniable intelligence led him to represent Denton High School's class of 1967 as valedictorian. He graduated in 1971 with a BA from UT Austin, and—in search of a profession equal to his talents—Joe attended medical school at UT Southwestern, graduating in 1975. His interest in the human condition, combined with a heart as big as Texas, led him to pursue the field of psychiatry. In total, Joe gave over 29 years of his life in service to his profession and to the veterans of south Texas; hospital awards and patient letters remain as a testament to his profound impact.
A reclusive and private man, Joe is nonetheless well known by a large circle of family and friends who appreciated his subtle wit, lack of pretense, incredible singing voice, and underlying kindness. After marrying the love of his life—Dr. Deborah Lundblade—in 1981, Joe fathered two children, Justin and Ashley, whom he cared for with an intense love and fatherly devotion. Joe and Deborah divorced after many years of marriage but remained devoted co-parents and lifelong best friends. At family gatherings, Joe was known for his understated and incisive wit, capable of inducing paroxysms of laughter in whoever was fortunate enough to be seated near him. A refined man of simple tastes, Joe loved the simple things in life: Chinese takeout, misty cold weather, Whataburger, a good drive, brush collection day, pop culture trivia, musicals, Starbucks, and any sort of sweets he could lay his hands on. In all his life, Joe never encountered a maintenance problem that couldn't be solved with duct tape. He died happy knowing his son, daughter, and daughter-in-law are carrying on the family legacy with careers in medicine and the arts.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Sybil and Temple, his wife Deborah Lundblade, as well as by many beloved relatives, friends, and colleagues. He leaves behind his two children, Justin and Ashley; daughter-in-law Samantha; niece Alina; nephews Kirk and Chris; in-laws Greg, Vita, and Patty; cousins Grady, Janice, Duane, Verne, David, Bettie Sue, Rick, Ercel, Mary, Tana, Gloria, Darlene, and Cheryl; as well as his pets Greta Garbo and Little Jaws. His friends JP, Susan, Dan, Marylin, Luke, Kathy, and his professional partner of over 30 years—Dr. Emilio Romero—will miss him greatly.
Funeral services will be held at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough, with a viewing at 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 10th, followed by a graveside service at Mission Burial Park North at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, February 11th. Immediately following the graveside service there will be a Celebration of Life for Joe at his home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ASPCA or the Lewy Body Dementia Association.

Un senor, doctor, colega totalmente humilde, empatico y sincero. Mostro un corazon el tamano de Tejas. En la vida encontramos personas que jamas nos olvidamos. Dr. Mahaney era uno de ellos. Que en paz descanse.

Condolences to all Joe's family and closest friends. I love this obituary and also this photo. The obit reminds me of the many things I loved about Joe. And I learned new things about him. I don't think I ever heard him sing. And the photo looks exactly like him even all these years later. Thank you for sharing at this time of grief.

Joe was a very smart and witty classmate of my high school class of 1967. He was very interesting to talk to.

Sending my deepest sympathy. I hadn't seen Joe in many years but I remember him well as a kind and thoughtful high school friend.
