John Cornelsen Obituary

John Wesley Cornelsen Sr. passed away peacefully surrounded by all of his children and devoted wife on the afternoon of Sunday, March 22, 2015. John was 71 years of age. Funeral: 1 p.m. Thursday in Biggers Funeral Chapel. Interment: Mount Olivet Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. John was born in Houston on Jan. 21, 1944, to Oliver A. Cornelsen and his loving wife, Albina Brumek Cornelsen. John was a gifted mathematician and draftsman. He thrived and was grateful for the 20-plus years in which he worked in the engineering business, especially enjoying his time at Carter-Burgess on Macon Street. John eventually left the field in order to serve his previous clients through his namesake land maintenance company of which he served as president and CEO. John enjoyed and deeply valued the multitude of friendships and relationships formed through his work. John was also known as "Bro. John" to the many people with whom he worshipped. To know him, was to know the God he worshiped and the Savior he served. John's love of the Lord was reflected in his love of Southern gospel music to which he sang. Adding to the list of bountiful gifts, John loved to play the piano and accordion and did so solely by ear. One could not separate John, his music and his desire to worship the Lord. He had a gift and this gift touched many lives. He made a difference. John was preceded in death by his parents. His father, Oliver, worked at General Dynamics until his passing in 1967. His mother, Albina, was ordained with the Assemblies of God. Their love of God was clearly evident in the life of their beloved son. Survivors: John is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Clounch of Jeffersonville, Ind., and her four children, Tim, Rebekah, Philip and Anna Joy, as well as her numerous grandchildren. John is also survived by his lovingly committed wife, Lana Mann Cornelsen, formerly of San Antonio. Though they were only 17 and 23 when they married 1967, the joining of these souls continually pulled them together and their commitment was renewed in 1981. John is also survived by his four children and his nine grandchildren, John W. Cornelsen Jr. of North Richland Hills and his three daughters, Chelsea, Michaela and MaKenzie, Tabitha Young of Greenwich, Conn., and her two sons, Ensign Vincent Young and Grant Cornelsen Young, Rachel Evans and husband, Brian, of Fort Worth, and their children, Connor Evans and Madison Evans, and Shalom Cornelsen and her two children, Brianna Cornelsen and Cameron Houston-Cornelsen. Though only hours have passed, our father and our mother's husband is profoundly missed.

My prayers are with the family. Losing someone your close to and love dearly, expectedly or unexpectedly is difficult no matter the circumstance that has preceded it. John was a unique and gifted man that I have memories of from a small child to my adult life. He has a special way about himself that could no be copied, and his musical talents were shared with me in some of my darkest times of need, while putting his own physical pain on hold to lift me up in my moment of need. I will cherish that forever. Although, he could be quite stern with us as children, he also taught us and showed us things, like no one else. The sternness never bothered me and I always enjoyed the little adventures he would take Shalom and I on. I pray for his dearest grandson that is away and grieving alone at sea, I pray peace and restoration to a broken chain, GOD KNOWS what the needs are! I am thankful for having the chance to know him. All my love and prayers.

Words cannot express how it feels to lose someone so dear to a family and the many people's lives that Bro. John touched. I wish their were words or something that could be done to take the pain away that is now in your hearts. To the natural, there is none but I know a man who can! John was such a special person to many people, especially to our family. He always was there to help in any way he could and encouraged us to keep fighting the good fight and always give God the credit for everything. He will truly be missed. Our hearts and prayers are with you all.

I will always remember John Cornelsen for his smile. Every time I ever spoke to him he would greet me with the best smile and a hug. I loved how he would sit in the car line waiting for the kids to get out of school with the windows down and telling me to listen to his beautiful music. John is truly one of the very best God could give us. My family and I consider the Cornelsen family part of our own. Lana, I love you my dear friend and I am only a call away for you. Love to you all. John touched our lives and will always have a special place in our hearts.

To the Cornelsen Family, Our hearts break for you and your profound loss. We are Tabitha's USNA family and our son, Cody, was in Vincent's Great Class of 2014. John's loving way was translated to Tabitha as she quickly adopted our son , Cody, as he and Vincent entered the world of New Ensign at Norfolk, Virginia. She took our son under her wing, and together, he and Vincent explored Norfolk, encouraged each other and bolstered each other's courage to deploy to The Arabian Sea all while being comforted by Tabitha Ann. John did such an amazing job in his life raising such a selfless and loving woman in Tabitha Ann, and also his love and devotion to both Vincent and Grant. Tabitha, know that the Crepe Myrtal petals of The Yard will gently line your Dad's pathway to heaven, He will cross through a bridge or swords held by our beloved warriors who guard the gates of heaven and will be welcomed by the same Lord who watches over your Vincent and Grant and all of our dear children in the Fleet and in this world. God now has his right hand man.

I will always remember a special visit I had with the Cornelsen's on the front porch of their beautiful country home. They were a kind and generous couple and it was very apparent they had a special devotion to one another. My Brother, you will be greatly missed.
