Clyde, Texas - Larry Vergil Smedley, 76, of Clyde passed away Monday, June 26, 2023, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 1, 2023, at Bailey Howard Funeral Home Chapel in Clyde, Texas. Visitation will be 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Larry was born December 14, 1946, in Big Spring to the late Vergil Lester and Oma Thelma (Griffin) Smedley. He graduated from Big Spring High School in 1964 and received his degree in Industrial Arts from Southwest Texas University, where he was a member of Pi-Kappa-Alpha. He married Janet Claire Brumhall in Arlington on July 6, 1974. He worked as a program manager in the defense industry for 35 years. Prior to that, he was a teacher in Arlington for seven years. He and Jan moved to Clyde from Annapolis, Maryland in 2007.
After returning to Clyde, Larry took over the project involving the Clyde Cemetery. He was very instrumental in having trees and bushes trimmed and removed, while also replacing the old fencing. It was very important to him to keep the rock pillars in front of the old cemetery, while replacing the pipe fencing with wrought iron fencing. He will be remembered as a fiercely proud grandfather who loved woodworking, puzzles, and listening to country music and oldies.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Jan Smedley; son, Larry Vergil Smedley, Jr. and wife Sarah Joy of Odenton, Maryland; daughter, Brianne "Bri" Smedley Lowe and husband Stephen Alan of Tishomingo, Oklahoma; sister, Jane Coots and husband Bill of Clyde; five grandchildren, Claire Smedley, Harper Lowe, Kiernan Lowe, Colton Smedley and Gunnar Lowe and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
