Brother on the grid-iron, bonded by place of origin (The Louie). I miss my brother, my team-mate, my fellow christian soldier. Your energy and perspective on the possibilities have shown itself so clearly with the success that Northwestern Athletics have experienced over the past decades. Your vision, your passion and your total focus on succeeding is a testament to the man and the team mate that you will always be. God bless your wife and sons as they have the memories of an outstanding family member. God bless the class of 1978 through 1982 as they knew you as a tireless supporter of the cause. With love

Percy has a special place in my heart. I played football with him at Northwestern. I first met him the summer before my Freshman year his sophomore year when we worked together on the Union Pacific Railroad in the middle of Oklahoma. From that point he was always like a brother. I will always be grateful for the way he help me adjust to those first days and months on campus Percy was always the optimist and full of energy His smile and voice will be missed.

To Frieda and the entire Holden family my thoughts and prayers I send to all of you. I met Percy at NU and he would eventually "adopt" me as his little sister, helping me navigate my way through my college years. Our talks were infrequent, but memorable. The last time I saw Percy was well over 10 years ago at James & Jacquie's wedding, that's where I met Frieda. I remember vividly that though he was ill he was still fun to be around and willing to do whatever to make James' day beautiful. That's how I will remember, my "big brother" Percy-selfless and happy. God Bless you Frieda.

Many years ago, I met this charismatic and energetic brother from St. Louis. Little did I know – nor could my imagination even possibly fathom, the extent to which this person would have an impact on my life. We met as young students, and grew up to become men who had jobs, with families and responsibilities. Our friendship crystallized within the context of a Fraternity pledge program and the various peaks and valleys that typically define the Collegiate/Fraternal experience. But over the years our bond was nurtured and strengthened on the basis of life experiences that extended far beyond the brief myopic of having been line brothers. When I received the news of Percy’s death, our life – the many experiences we shared over the past 25 years flashed by in bright, painful increments - because Percy had passed on…and it felt like a part of me and gone with him.

Manhood. Scholarship. Perseverance. Uplift. If you know anything about the Ques, or just happened to be passing by where a few of us had congregated, then you can probably recall a time when a reference was made to one or more of these four Cardinal Principles. And if you knew Percy, then you are left with absolutely no doubt that he exhibited them on a daily basis with a grace and a sense of purpose that was difficult to match. Work and other commitments prevented me from making our annual Labor Day Bash in Atlanta this year, so Percy and I had spoken about meeting half way in Kansas City later in the fall – just a quick weekend, so our families could catch up with each other and the kids could play and get reacquainted. Percy was good like that. Always making time - and always thinking of a way to share and promote what was most important to him. Friendship. Love. And most especially, Family.

While Percy has passed on, his spirit will continue to manifest through his wife and three sons. To Frieda, Ricky B, Coolio and Nickle-Pickle, always know that Uncle Shorty loves you very much. Aunty Jacque loves you. And Gavhriel, Jamieson and Elijah love you. Right now it’s still hard. The tears still come and the heartache hasn’t quite dissipated. But there will be other occasions for commiseration. More basketball and swimming; more boat rides and trips to museums; and more labor days with the extended F8HWC Family - with camp fires and Crab Legs and Briskets grilling in the back yard – and more opportunities to celebrate the legacy of your husband and father. Percy was a good man, the very best kind of man. He was my brother, and he was my friend.

The Percy Holden family has lived next door to my daughter and son-in-law for many years. Many times Vickie and John have spoken fondly of Percy and his family. We were thankful that such good neighbors lived next door. He will be missed. God surely needed him to take him away from such a lovely family.

Seven years ago my family and I met Percy and his family. We moved next door to them and the very same day Percy brought over many many drinks on ice for us. This kind of welcoming spirit is so rare in individuals but not rare in Percy Holden. I feel privileged in just knowing him for the short amount of time that I did. He will truly be missed. Love to Freida and the boys.

We just wanted to let you know that we are thinking about you and your family at this difficult time. You are in our daily prayers also. We had never met you, Percy, or the kids, but got to read about you all in B.J.'s annual Christmas letter/book! I used to work with B.J. a long time ago at Pepsi in Wichita and we are still good friends. Deepest sympathy.

In the fall of 1972, when I boarded Bus #3 to my new school, Wade Elementary, the first student I met was Percy. I sat next to him that first day. He introduced himself and we shook hands like grown men. I was apprehensive about attending the gifted program, but Percy's easy confidence and grace wore off on me, and I felt much better by the time we arrived. Later I attended Southwest with him, where his brother Ben succeeded me as editor of the school paper. We crossed paths again at Northwestern, where I was happy to see a friendly face from North St. Louis. I will always have fond memories of Percy; he was a scholar and one of those seldom-found gifted athletes who had patience and compassion for those less talented. My heart goes out to his family, and I am grateful to have known him.
Sincerely,
Jabari Asim

My family has known Percy since the early 70's when my brother and I attended the Herbert Hoover Boys Club. My parents were bus monitors for Wade and met Percy when he was selected for the gifted program. I was attending Busch and so we didn't cross paths again until Southwest where I also met Ben. I met Stacy through one of our basketball buddies, Taco. I had known Percy's mother since the Herbet Hoover days, but got to know her even better during high school as she looked me over to make sure I was the type of boy from the hood she could trust with her son. My parents didn't know that I knew Percy and so as they told stories and I told stories, we realized that it had to be the same kid. Phyllis Anthony, my sister, met Percy while substituting on the bus for my mother, and her husband, Levy Anthony, was Percy's senior English teacher at Soldan. Yes, my family knew him well. As my sister stated, Percy always visited my family when he returned to St. Louis or when we visited Dallas to see my nephew Levy, Jr. Percy had met Levy, Jr. at church. My family truly loved Percy. As for me, Percy and I had a friendship that was deeper than most. He admired me and I admired him. He mentored me and I mentored him. We challenged each other, but it was a challenge to push each other to his full potential. We truly wanted to see each other do well. We shared ideas and when he decided to go into education, he called me and asked for guidance at every step of the way. When I heard someone say that he told every teacher that they were his favorite, I had to laugh. The truth is that he meant it. Only Percy could see the best in everyone he met. When he first introduced me to his wife, Freida, he prepped me like he was about to show me the crown jewels. He was so happy and loved her so much that he wanted to make sure that I understood what a wonderful woman she was. He was also proud of his sons. He never bragged about their athletic achievements, but he did always talk about running from this game to the next. What we talked about most was how smart his sons were going to be. He wanted them to be smarter than he was and he was actually living through each of them. The last time I was in Dallas, Percy took me by the house so that I could see each of them in their rooms. They were asleep, but Percy just smiled the smile of a proud father as he "introduced" me to each of his sleeping sons. My mother called me Wednesday morning. She had read the obituary in the paper. I have been in shock ever since. I will truly miss my friend, but I was truly blessed to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with the family now and always.

Holden Family,
Please accept my deepest condolences. I played with Percy at NU and will always remember him for his boundless energy and optimism. We did not have the best of teams when I arrived and many of the players had been beaten down by losing, but Percy was a beacon of light that kept us pushing forward. It sounds like that spirit guided him throughout his life. We are all sad for your loss, but be equally proud of the man Percy was.

Mr. Holden will be dearly missed here at Fannin. I will never forget how he lifted the spirits of our students and staff on a daily basis. Percy was one of the most sincere and dedicated friends anyone could have. He was selfless and thoughtful and always positive. We were roommates for a time in college and then again for a brief time in Riverside, CA when he worked for Dow Jones. My heart has been heavy since his passing but I have so many fond memories to smile about and enjoy and those thoughts will stay with me forever. His entire family will continue to be in my prayers. His legacy will live on through his boys and I'm certain his lovely wife will remember his love and devotion.

To the entire family of Percy Holden especially his wife Freida and sons, Richard, Bryan and Nicholas, I was shocked to hear of Percy's homegoing. I attended Northwestern University with Percy and we clicked right away. (We were both glad to see someone from home - St. Louis) He was a man of tremendous integrity even at the early age of 18. I respected him then as I do now. He was always fun to be around and I am a better person having known him. I shall never forget him or the good times we had. My prayer is that GOD will strengthen you in the days ahead. Please know that you are not alone--we are ALL praying for you.

Dear Holden Family:
I was very saddened to hear the news of Mr. Holden's passing. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Holden when he was a teacher at Bowie. Even though he wasn't my sons teacher, Herman had many, many stories to tell me about his encounters with Mr. Holden, especially when they went to Camp Grady Spruce. Mr. Holden made a great impression on Herman and he will be missed. Please know that our prayers are with all of you and that we wish we could be there for you. Holden Family:

Percy was my mentor, but most importantly, my friend. He inspired me to become a teacher and has helped me every step of the way. Even with his busy life, he never forgot about me, just as I will never forget about him and what he did for me. He wasn't just a passer by in the lives of the people he knew. He truly touched everyone's life that he possibly could. He was a wonderful man that will always have a place in my heart. I wouldn't be where I am today without his encouraging words. I still can't believe that he is gone, but I know he is with God and we will all see him again. Percy will be truly missed and my thoughts and prayers are with Frieda and the boys.

To the Family:
We were just talking about Percy yesterday and his planned visit to St. Louis/Columbia to see Mizzou play. I can't describe the feeling this morning when Winston shared his passing and the loss of his mom. Percy was a friend to our family and always visited when he came to town. Likewise, when we visit Arlington, he always comes to see us. Percy's love of God, family, and mankind are a testimony of his life. Philipians 4:13 says, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." God is a healer, let Him take hold of you and guide you through the sadness. We will continue to pray for your family. We would like to express our sincere condolences to Freida and sons regarding their loss. While we know words at this time can not capture the feelings you are experiencing, please know our prayers are with you and your family. Place your trust in the Lord and you will make it past this very difficult time. Percy will always be in our hearts as we recall memories of him. Terry played football at NU with Percy. Please tell his sons to remember what a tough resilient player he was. Not the biggest person on the field, but his heart made up for any size he did not have. Margaret, my wife, also went to school with him and remembers him as a gentleman always willing to help out and make others laugh. These are the fond memories we recall as we think of Percy.
