Robert Briles Obituary

The Rev. Robert Houston Briles Sr., 85, passed away Saturday morning, Sept. 6, 2014. Funeral: 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Weatherford. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Greenwood. Pallbearers: Everett Goar, Joe Lee, Leo Neely, Tom Porter, Robert Duvall and Danny Bruce. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Methodist Children's Home, Waco, or the Texas Pythian Home, Weatherford. The Rev. Briles was born June 20, 1929, and was raised in Milford. He graduated from Milford High School, received his B.A. from Southwestern University in Georgetown, followed by a master's degree from Texas Christian University's Brite Divinity School. Before graduating from Southwestern University, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War, from 1952 to 1953. His experiences in Korea shaped his life as a husband, father and pastor. He committed his life to God in Jesus Christ at a young age and always considered himself a shepherd, tending his flock. In February 1956, he met Irene Gregg while serving in Poolville and they married in June of that year. They spent 56 wonderful years together until her death in 2012. He was an elder in full connection with the Central Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church. He served 15 different congregations from 1951 until his retirement in 1994. Bob served as a Master Mason in good standing for over 50 years and was a member of Whitt Lodge #624 for the last 30 years. While living in Weatherford, he provided support and leadership at Manna Storehouse for over 25 years. The family would like to express appreciation to the nursing staff of the Palliative Care Unit at T.H.R. Harris Methodist Hospital and Community Hospice at the James L. West Special Care Center. The Rev. Briles was preceded in death by his wife, Irene; son, Robert H. Briles Jr.; parents, James Otis and Bertha Briles; brother, James Otis Briles Jr.; sister, Nina and her husband, Boyd Barnard; and sister, Margaret and her husband, Bill Schroeder. Survivors: He was a loving father to Susan Briles, Mary Katherine "Cassie" Gresham and husband, Joe; and grandfather to Sara Elizabeth Dixon and husband, Jonathan; and his future great-grandchild due in January 2015; and niece, Linda Bradford.

Bob and Irene were my very special friends. To say that I miss them is very mild. Susan and Cassie, I'm sorry I wasn't able to come to their funerals. Bob, was so kind to me, in every way, he was gentle, yet firm when I needed it, like another Daddy. My Friend, yet, he was my Senior Pastor and as organist, I respected him and wanted to play music as he wanted the services to reflect the message he was trying to give of our Lord Jesus Christ. He was so sincere in all he did and served the Lord, his wife and family. People who did not know him, missed a great man!! After I left to go to Michigan State University at 22, he would call me at times to check on me. He knew it was a long stretch from Haltom City and I had never been up North. If that isn't caring and being a Christian, then I don't know what is, in my book. Your parents, would have me over, and I'd always get something to drink, or eat, or just sit and visit with both of them. Now they are together again. He worked so hard for the Methodist church and the people there, but for the Lord. It was quite an honor to be included in their home, visits with your Daddy, and knowing each of you. He was most proud of his girls (Susan, CAssie and Sara). Love you all, and my sympathy, Denise French Lamb

I found Bob's obituary in the Weatherford Democrat. He was really a wonderful christian man. He was so gracious to conduct my husband's (Marvin Malone) funeral in 2008. He will be missed, but he now with Irene.

Bob was in my class of 1948 at Milford High School. We were reunited at our 50th class reunion and stayed in touch afterwards. Bob was a wonderful friend and a fine Christian man. He conducted my husband's funeral(Glenn R.Ellison) on Oct.6,2007. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. May he rest in peace.

The Evans family holds a special place in our hearts for Bob. He and my late grandfather were like brothers, serving side by side at Couts UMC, and now they celebrate as brothers under one house. He is missed so much but I know he has gained everything. All our love and prayers are with you!
