Wayne Sage Obituary

Wayne Byron Sage, 86, of Bedford died Tuesday, April 28, 2009.
Burial: (private) Lakeview Cemetery in Broomfield, Colo.
Wayne was born May 28, l922, in Forest Grove, Ore., to Jesse George Sage and Joan Pierce Sage. The family moved to Hermiston, Ore. Following the death of his father in 1936, he and his mother moved to Paoli, Colo. He graduated from Phillips County High School in Haxtun, Colo., in 1940.
Wayne enlisted in the Army and served in the Pacific during World War ll. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, he attended Colorado State University in Fort Collins, receiving a bachelor of science degree with a major in sociology in 1950 and a master of education degree with a major in guidance and counseling in 1952.
He married Jane Ardis Failor on Sept. 1, 1949, in Arvada, Colo. The couple met while both were attending the university. Following his graduation, they moved to Akron, Colo., where he was employed as a caseworker with the Washington County Department of Public Welfare and their two daughters were born.
In 1957 The family moved to Broomfield, Colo. Wayne was employed with the Colorado State Department of Public Welfare in Denver and pursued a master's degree in social work. He received this degree in 1960 from the University of Denver and continued his employment with the state of Colorado as a public assistance supervisor. In 1965 he accepted employment with the regional office of the federal Department of Health Education and Welfare in Denver. He retired in 1987 as the deputy regional administrator with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Social Security Administration, Office of Family Assistance. In 2005, he and his wife, Jane, moved to Bedford to be near their daughters and grandchildren.
Throughout his working and retirement years, Wayne continued an interest in helping people through volunteer work and community service organizations. He was a past commander of the American Legion in Akron, Colo., and was a charter member of the Lions Cub in Akron. He was a past president of the Lions Club in Broomfield, Colo., and a life member of the VFW in Broomfield. He also volunteered for a number of years with a food bank program in Broomfield. He enjoyed traveling, camping, reading and gardening.
Survivors: Wife, Jane; daughters, Amy Vozar (Mark) of Bedford and Lisa Powell (David) of Grapevine; and grandchildren, Laura Rothhammer, Sarah Hightower and Aiden Powell.
