William Guy Obituary

William "Bill" M. Guy

August 31, 1942 - August 7, 2024

Fort Worth, Texas - Brigadier General William Murrell Guy, known affectionately as Bill, passed away on August 7, 2024, at the age of 81, in Fort Worth, Texas. Born on August 31, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee, Bill's life was marked by his dedication to his work, his love for the outdoors, and his deep affection for his family.

A proud graduate of Memphis State University, Bill earned his BA in marketing in 1964. His leadership skills were evident early on as he excelled in the ROTC program, leading to a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Bill served his country with distinction, flying tactical airlift operations in the Vietnam War until 1969. He continued his service in the Texas Air National Guard, where he held several key positions, including Chief of the 136th Airlift Wing Command Post and Commander of the 181st Airlift Squadron. In 1992, he was promoted to Brigadier General, assuming the role of Wing Commander of the 136th Tactical Airlift Wing at Hensley Field until his retirement from military service in 1995.

Parallel to his military career, Bill worked as a pilot for Delta Airlines for 32 years, flying aircraft ranging from the DC-8 to the B777. He retired in 2002 as the Chief Line Check Pilot for the B777, having logged over 25,000 hours of flying time across military and civilian aircraft. Beyond aviation, Bill ventured into real estate, energy, and other business interests, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit.

Bill's enthusiasm extended into his community involvement and hobbies. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Keller. He served as a founding member and director of the B-36 Peacemaker Museum in Ft. Worth and volunteered as treasurer of the 911 Aircrew Memorial Foundation.

An avid sports enthusiast, Bill possessed a passion for hunting and fishing with his friends. A natural athlete, he excelled at baseball, playing shortstop for much of his youth. His devotion to aviation fueled his love of his restored 1949 L17B Navion aircraft which he flew to his ranch, on hunting trips, and for charitable organizations.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Bedford Guy and Valla Ruth Guy, and his brother, Maurice Webber.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Carole Hays Guy; three children, Deidre Guy Northcott (John), Andrea Guy Folse (Kevin), and Eric Guy (Donna); and eight grandchildren: Michael, Hana (Trevor), Graham, Caleb, Jack, Marin, Savannah (Adam), and Skyler. He also leaves behind a great-grandchild, Oliver Kemp, and his brothers, Gary (Lynn) and Ron (Nancy) Guy, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Bill's legacy as a patriot, pilot, and family man will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him. His faith in Christ gives his family and friends the confidence that we will be reunited with Bill in heaven.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 2:30 pm at the Live Oak Chapel at Greenwood Funeral Home, 3100 White Settlement Road, Ft. Worth, Texas.

So sorry to hear about Bill. He was a very fine man and a great addition to Delta Air Lines. He will be missed by us all. We first met in a Delta class for the L100 at Love Field. If not for him most of us would not have finished the class. Since he had flown the C130 in the Air Force he became our go to instructor. May God be with all of his family.

Bill was the best neighbor for 25 years. We were together at Glenview Church with him and Carole for over 15 years and there wasn´t a better servant leader. We are eternally grateful for his service to our country and his faithful generosity to us many others. May God´s love cover the family like a blanket as they cherish his sweet memories.

BG Guy was one of the finest people I have ever known. He cared deeply about everyone in the military and especially the 136th. He is going to be deeply missed. Bill was very generous to the Silver Eagles, lending us his hanger for all of our Oktoberfest celebrations. He was always there and made a point of visiting with everyone. He was amazing to talk to and to listen to.

As a wing commander, aircrew commander and leader, he was the very best. Anyone that ever had a chance to fly with him spoke very highly of the kind of airman he was. He was a true patriot and an amazing individual.

I was greatly saddened to know he is no longer with us, but I know he's with his heavenly father now.

RIP General. You have left an endearing legacy with so many people.

I have so many great memories of serving with Bill, starting with our coming off Active duty and into the 181st Air Refueling Squadron at the same time, then 10 years later , the 181st Airlift Squadron, and later, the 136th Airlift Wing. He and I shared numerous deployments and flights, all the way to our joint Retirement Party -- 25 years that flew by! May Bill's Celebration of Life be a joyous remembrance of those great years and be a tribute to a warrior with boundless energy, love of family AND AIRPLANES! We know that, as a military wife, when Bill served as the 136th AW Commander, a 110% commitment was required from both of you, and you, too, were a "warrior." Carol and I are praying for God's comfort, strength and peace in the days to come.

Bill was a very good friend and man. I knew him for more than 30 years with the B-36 Peacemaker Museum as we work a lot together on many projects and the restoration of the B-36 Bomber.

General Bill Guy was the epitome of a true gentleman and his generosity and kindness and friendliness gained many friends and as one, I always looked forward to being in his company and sharing many great memories as a fellow 136th member.
As his KC-97L crew chief on several deployments to Germany I trusted his abilities and was treated with his usual care and respect!
Bill will always be remembered and missed.

I,m sorry to hear of Bill's passing. We flew together way back in the C-130 and onwards. Enjoyed every minute of flying with Bill. I believe we will be brothers and sons of our Father God when Christ Jesus returns, bringing the Kingdom of God to the earth.

I met Bill while visiting a few pilots in the Dallas/Fort Worth area while planning to write an article on them as editor of "Delta Golden Wings, Inc. Magazine." My time with him was most enjoyable, especially the time we spent talking about his flying past and his many interests in retirement. I found him so enthusiastic and appreciated his supporting so many things of worthy cause that helped others. But, as secretary of Delta Golden Wings, I write this message of sympathy to his survivors on behalf of our members, many of which were close friends. Bill will be remembered by so many of his family and friends for all the happy times he spent with each, especially family members who will always remember him by the time you spent with each other. May God's blessings, from your own faith in Christ, be with each of you during this time of sadness by his passing. He will never be forgotten in your life span because of the cherished memories you have of the time you had together in many activities.
