He was my best friends father and when in his company I always felt important and at ease. I miss both my friend and his father.

Uncle Russ always had a smile and a story to share. I will miss him and the stories...he told us about flying with friends, the Navy, fishing, racing and anything else that popped in his head... may you rest in peace Uncle Russ ...love ya!

Dad and I made a trip back to Indiana in 2003 to visit relatives and to see the Brickyard 400.
While visiting in Anderson, his sister Betty said she would make a few phone calls for a get together
at the park.
When we arrived at the park, there must have been close to fifty people there. There were
cousins, nieces, nephews, and a large extended family of Shanks.
My Dad was overwhelmed and thought that was just the greatest picnic ever.

I'm sadden to hear Great Uncle Russell has passed. I have several memories of him coming to visit my grandma, his sister, Bessie. He was always fun to be around. I remember on a few occasions he gave me "big nickels"(fifty cent coins). I always thought that was great.

Mr. Shank was my hometown hero. We were both from Anderson, IN. We both ended up in Bonham, TX. I was privileged to share the last few years of his life with him. He loved to play games and was quite the competitor. He was always fun loving and welcoming to those who were new. He had a great sense of humor, and loved to speed around in his chair. We miss him here at the VA!

I remember Russ doing the BBQ in the pit in Montana, what an all encompassing personality.

We would like to share a couple of memories of Uncle Russell with you. Tom's memory is of Uncle Russell giving his parents a lion head door knocker for the front door of their new home. It has remained there for 60 years and was well loved. Marsha's memory of Uncle Russell is of when he was visiting one summer and came into the store where she was working and told her with a big smile "I made it past 68. I can live forever now.". He was so very happy that day. We will miss him but will always have good memories of him. You are in our thoughts, prayers and love.
