I never met Aalok, but reading about him compells me to sign. I can tell he touched many lives and was a positive influence while he worked towards his goals. It's a shame, I never got to know him. Rest in peace, Aalok, and my condolences to the Modi family.

Nina Bhen, Shishir Bhai, & Saumil,
We were very sorry to learn of Aalok's death. For years we have heard nothing but wonderful things about Aalok from Daksha, Dilip, and Rohan. They have always described him as a kind and brilliant individual. Rohan has always looked to him as a role model and from reading the many posts about Aalok it is obvious many people were touched by his presence. We give our deepest love and sympathy as you face this difficult time in your lives. May his memories live forever.

Early in the summer of 2007 my wife and I drove to Duke to help our son David and his roommate Sahil move from dorm room to apartment. The weather was hot as we transferred boxes, many boxes, from the dorm to the cars to the apartment. About six hours later we were unloading the last two carloads. We were tired, hungry, and growing weak but the largest and heaviest load still waited to be carried upstairs from the cars. As we walked downstairs from the apartment to the courtyard, along came a group of students that all new David and Sahil. Amongst them was a tall, smiling young man who immediately offered to help. We carried the last of the load and I was in awe as this tall young man cheerfully carried the largest and heaviest box upstairs. He never stopped smiling and joking with the others. I mentioned to him that I wish I would have met him three hours earlier, so that he could share more of the joy of moving with us. He just looked at me and chuckled. I don’t recall who the other guys were but I remember just this one. I remember thinking he’s so young but he’s got what it takes and the world is his oyster, a truly unique individual and a very old soul indeed.
Now several months later David called home at two o’clock in the morning and told my wife that he had just gotten back from the hospital. He told the story of what had happened to this young man. He talked of the basketball game, the desperation, the shock, and the loss. He talked about holding his friend in his arms and feeling helpless. He said that he now understands why we worry so much. He said that now he knows life has to be savored because it is so short. He said that he has learned all these things and more from his good friend Aalok.
We talk of things that could have been and we grieve for ourselves because we feel the loss. I am so grateful to Aalok for so many things. I only met him once and then briefly but he touched me very deeply. I know that he also touched everyone around him in this same way. Fortunate are the people who knew this fine young man. His spirit lives on and so does his love for everything and everyone that he has ever come across.

Dear Modi Family,
I cannot express how sorry I am for your loss. I could not respect anyone more than I have respected Aalok since the day I met him, and I will continue to cherish his memory. I feel so blessed to have my life influenced by him, and to have had his friendship. He was honestly the best friend and most remarkable man I can imagine, and I know that the world was made better through him.
