Barbara Fischer Obituary

Fischer Barbara Marie (Kearns) Fischer, age 81, died peacefully at home on Friday, September 6, 2013 after a six-month struggle with complications of COPD. Barbara was a resident of Westerville for over 30 years. She was born in Gary, WV in 1932 to Thelma (Francisco) and Walter J. Kearns and was the youngest of six children. She graduated Bluefield HS in 1950 and earned her RN degree from St. Mary's School of Nursing in 1953. She retired from Mt. Carmel West Hospital to become a dedicated mother and homemaker for her family. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Harry Fischer (2007). She is survived by her four children, Joe Fischer, Ann Gerbec (Ian), Paul Fischer, and Amy Albu (John); grandchildren, Chris Fischer, Steven Fischer, Cody Gordon, Melanie Cox, Zach Gordon, Karley Gordon-Fischer; and two great grandsons, Ayden and Owen Fischer. She is also survived by two sisters, Kathryn Kirkwood and Peggy Harman; and brother-in-law Jerry (and Barbara) Fischer; as well as many special cousins, nieces, nephews, godchildren and friends. She truly cherished her family and her friends. She was active in her church community through the years and volunteered her time to help those in need that the church assisted. Her gentle nature, generous character, genuine friendliness and wonderful sense of humor will be missed tremendously. A visitation will be held at MORELAND FUNERAL HOME, 55 E. Schrock Rd, Westerville, OH on Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Elizabeth's Church, 6077 Sharon Woods Blvd, Columbus, OH on Friday (September 13) at 11 a.m. Rev. Fr. David E. Gwinner Celebrant. Family will receive friends at the church prior to the service. Private internment will follow at a later date. Special thanks to St. Joseph's Hospice. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the American Lung Association, or, if you are currently a smoker, please consider quitting in memory of Mom.

Amy, Ann, Joe, and I can't remember who the fourth one is: Tonight when I came in I said I was going to call my dear friend whom I had not been in contact with for so long. Feeling so guilty, I found that none of the numbers were in service. Not knowing how to contact any family, I searched. I am crushed to hear the sad news about her passing. We are the only two of our St. Mary's class remaining who still stayed in touch. I am deeply grieved to part with her and our long conversations via phone. She was a true friend, and a bridesmaid at my wedding. I will miss her so much and send my sincerest sympathy to you all. I will always keep her in my prayers as well all of you. God bless you Barb, and keep your sense of humor going! With Love.

I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your mother, Barbara. She was always extremely kind, compassionate and loving. She made everyone feel welcome and I will never forget her. I still have the Christmas tree she gave me and I use it every year to honor her. You are all in my prayers and thoughts as you make this journey without her.

Barb and I have been friends for over 45 years. We have done a lot of crocheting together, a lot of crying over sad things in our lives, our Mothers died the same year and still we laughed a lot, ate a lot of lunches, but most of all we were friends. I will miss you my dear friend.
