Deyo Charles A. Deyo, 76, of Galena, Ohio, lost his battle with cancer on June 16, 2015. He was born on August 26, 1938 to the late Robert H. and Goldie Lane Deyo. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Carol, and their children, Brad (Marcia), and Brian (Pam), and two grandchildren, Tyler and Jessica, who he loved very much, along with the family's pets, Patches, Pepper, Cabo, Zoom, Angel and Tigger. Chuck graduated from Columbus Central High School in 1957, where he earned All-City and All-State honors in football. He was drafted by Woody Hayes to play football at the Ohio State University. During the two years he played there, he earned a pair of gold pants when OSU beat Michigan. After a brief break in college, he enrolled at Otterbein College where he played his remaining year of eligibility and graduated in 1963 with a BS in Education. He later earned his MS in Education at Xavier University. Chuck started his teaching and coaching career in the Columbus City School District at Franklin Junior High School and went on to East High School as an assistant football and head wrestling coach. In 1968, Frank Howe (his former high school coach) had an opening at Northland High School and invited Chuck to join his staff in football and become the head wrestling coach. He later added girls fast pitch softball when he dropped football so he could watch his son play. Chuck's teams were very successful and won many city championships and tournaments during his 33 years of coaching. He loved his students and athletes and kept in contact with them in the years after his retirement in 1995. All of his life he had wanted to fly, so he took flight lessons and earned his Private Pilot, Instrument Rating, and Commercial licenses after his retirement. He was able to fly people all around the country in single engine planes for several years. He finished his working career at The Ohio State University Airport, retiring from there in September of 2014. He was blessed to teach, coach and work with exceptional people who he dearly loved and who he kept in touch with all the years of his life. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 1 p.m., at the Galena Methodist Church, 2777 Sunbury Road, Galena, Ohio 43021 with Pastor Dirk Wooten officiating. Arrangements entrusted to DeVORE-SNYDER FUNERAL HOME in Sunbury. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Chuck's memory to Ohio Health Kobacker House, 800 McConnell Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43214. Condolences may be expressed at www.snyderfuneralhomes.com

Chuck and I were on the football team at Otterbein and were close as we both also rode to work during our summer jobs. He worked at Timken and I worked at Kroger Baking so we had many funny conversations on the way to and from work each day during the summer. Chuck was always upbeat and always had us laughing. Before work one day, Chuck, Bob Meeks and I had a corn eating contest (to see who could eat the most corn on on the cob) at my house. My mother cooked the corn and we all were eating as fast as we could and I am glad to say I beat both Chuck and Bob by eating 12 ears of corn. Chuck ate 11 and Bob only 10 then we had to go to work. We laughed all the way to work! Chuck always had something funny to say to us young guys as he was a married man and we were just kids to him. Ha We reconnected after all the years at a dinner meeting with a bunch of us teammates and then we started to call each other as I lived in Arizona but tried to get together each time I was in Ohio, but we always called each other. Near the end, he called me to tell me how much fun it was to reconnect and how he appreciated my telephone calls, he passed not long after that. Here he was about to go to the hereafter and he was calling me to tell me how thankful he was. I have cherished that call so much since and it always brings a smile to my face when I think of how much I miss him, then I laugh and say how blessed I have been just knowing him Love him.

I just wanted to say I'm very sorry for your loss, I just got word of his passing. I worked with him at OSU but left there in 2014. Chuck was a great and very funny man and I am very happy that I was able to know him. I hope you and your family are at peace. My condolences to you and your family.

Deyo family - He was a great man, funny, interesting, and my former wrestling coach. He taught me how to get in shape, and how to appreciate it. After my first year, my skateboarding took off. I wrote a letter of appreciation to him a few years after getting out of Ohio state. His son fixed my garage door when I lived in Westerville, and I told him how much I appreciated Coach Deyo's influence on my life. I will always remember him, and his wit, smile and the way he said "duck unders".

My deepest sympathies go out to the Deyo family and community. Few people I know have touched so many others in such a positive and caring way as Mr Deyo did!
He always was interested in how you were doing and how your family was! Several times over the years I came into Columbus for a rugby tourney as a player and later as a high school rugby coach and Mr Deyo would come out to visit and watch some games at the field; a few times I was able to be in Columbus and call Mr Deyo to meet for lunch and catch up on friends and athletes I hadn't seen in so long; or just reminisce about high school and college days! You always knew he was genuinely interested in you and cared about you and your family! He was never without a smile and he always made time to sit and talk when it was needed! You will be forever missed and always remembered Mr Deyo!

We were so sorry to hear about Chuck's passing. Chuck was always so positive and enthusiastic. I never remember him without a smile on his face. We had such fun visiting him, Carol and the extended family when we were in Columbus and had a wonderful time when they came to visit us in San Diego.

Chuck was always such a strong supporter of our son Julius' athletic endeavors, but he was always so humble about his own accomplishments. We never knew he played for Woody Hayes until fairly recently.

Our sincere thoughts of comfort go out to Carol and the rest of Chuck's family. He will be sorely missed. He had a huge positive impact on the world in a way that very few do.

Carol, Brad, and Brian...thank you for sharing your husband and father with us all. He was one of a kind and a positive influence, teacher, mentor, coach, and true servant leader example to us all. He could never have done for so many without the love and support you gave and did for him each day at home. He had a life full of love and happiness and now rests pain free with our Lord. May God bless you with peace during this difficult time.

Brian and Pam, Mrs Deyo. I was very saddened when I heard that Charlie had passed away. As you know he was always one of my favorites when in high school. And all thru the years. Brian thanks for bringing your dad to see me when you did. It always made my night. The VIKING community has lost a great one. But his memory will live forever. He was an inspiration to all who knew him. I am so sorry for your loss. May the memories help you thru this difficult time. He is in a better place. And teaching the heavens. May God bless you and your family.

Mrs. Deyo and family I am sorry for your loss. Your husband and father was the greatest person of influence in my life. I thank you for the sacrifice your family endured for the benefit of the student's of Northland High School. Coach Deyo's values and work ethic were very transparent. In fact, he is more than likely teaching St. Christopher the proper technique to execute an elbow pass to a high single leg! I am honored to be part of his legacy.

Carol, Brian, & Brad- I had the privilege of being with Chuck in those last days. He has left a lasting impression on my life with the way he carried himself with grace and dignity. He re-enforced in me to take the time and reach out a helping hand to those in need. I will miss him very much, especially around the First Saturday in August.

I was highly privileged to play with Chuck and several other coaches in softball in Westerville. We were an undefeated Red Head team and had an undefeated team around 1970. It was the last out of the last game. Chuck was in center field and I was in left. I can't remember thje battger after two outs, but he hit the ball a ton and there was no fence. I barely chased the ball down, stretched, and caught the ball in the web. I said: " Boy was that lucky!" Chuck and I chuckled all the way back to our bench.
Chuck was the kind of sport everybody admired and appreciated. I have offered a prayer for you and your family, Carol. Jesus will easily advocate on Chuck's behalf in Heaven.

My thoughts and prayer go out to the coach's family. He was a great man, and mentor for me while I was in school. He remembered me over the years and at the golf outing at Mill Creek a couple of years ago in his honor we had time to reminisce about the great wrestling team we had at Northland (1972-1974). Coach you will be missed!!!

Dear Carol and Family, Thank you so much for sharing coach with us. He was such a marvelous motivator and friend to everyone. His attention and kindness will never be forgotten and his love for mankind is multiplied beyond belief by the lives he touched. That beautiful smile not only lit up a room when he entered; but, lit up so many faces in response to just seeing him smile. Thank you Deyo for helping form the man my son became.

Two Chuck Deyo stories come to mind when remembering him.

Right before he gave us our first test in Biology, he stated "I am the tester, and you are the testees"

Second was the story about him driving home in college one night (after curfew for the football team) and the old man in front of him was driving slow. Deyo honked his horn and flashed his lights, but the old man continued to drive slowly down the road. He finally passed the old man and when he looked over to express his displeasure with the man, he saw it was Coach Hayes!!!!

The world lost a great teacher and coach with the passing of Chuck Deyo. He will be missed.
